The Jewish quarter of biblical Berea is nestled on the western edge of the city, right along the verdant banks of the Tripotamos River. It is called Barbouta and its name is believed to derive from an ancient fountain or waterspout that once flowed in the area. Located just a scenic one-hour drive west of Thessaloniki, Berea much like other Macedonian towns is celebrated for its lush, runaway vegetation and the abundance of natural springs that adorn its streets.
