The NRZ this week joins other railway companies in the region in commemorating the Southern African Railways Association (SARA) Safety Week. The safety week is being held under the theme: Think Safe, Work Safe: From Workplace to Communities, Every Action Counts. The main focus is bringing awareness to communities on increasing public awareness on railway and level-crossing safety, curb track-related accidents, injuries and fatalities, and promote uniform safety standards aligned with SADC-SARA guidelines. Accordingly, we are will conducting safety week campaigns targeting our three regions; Eastern, Midlands and Southern for the week ending 16 October, 2026.

The NRZ has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Occupational Safety and Health by the National Social Security Authority for the period January to December 2025. The certificate was presented at the Safety and Health at Work Conference in Victoria Falls on Thursday evening. The NRZ has signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement with Grand Rail Solutions (GRS), a local logistics company, to transport 1,7 million tonnes of raw materials, mainly coal, and finished steel products, by rail to and from the Manhize steel plant in Mvuma.
Grand Rail Solutions will provide locomotives, wagons and fuel while NRZ comes in with infrastructure and crews to drive the trains.
Under the deal, 1.1 million tonnes of coal will be transported to Mvuma while 600 000 tonnes of steel in the grades of pig iron, steel billets and other products will be moved to the market per annum.
The second phase will see the two entities collaborate in the upgrade of the railway track between Gweru and Mvuma to bring it up to standard at an estimated cost of about $27 million. This will enable the movement of significantly increased traffic volumes on the line.
The next phase of the deal will be the construction of a 50km track from Mvuma to Manhize to link the steel plant to the railway network under a Build-Transfer- Operate (BTO) model.
GRS will finance construction of the track and transfer it to NRZ which will operate on the line with costs of construction recovered through offsets.
This deal is set to significantly increase annual tonnage for NRZ while at the same time transfer the bulk of coal traffic from Hwange from road to rail. It will also significantly reduce the cost of production and ensure that Zimbabwean products are competitive on the global market.
