TRUCK HIJACK ALERT
Industry sources indicate truck hijackings are on the increase. The following high risk areas, vehicles and commodities were identified:
Red Alert Areas:
N3 between Harrismith and Alberton.
N12 between Benoni and Middelburg
Delmas area is specifically bad.
Bronkhorstspruit area is specifically bad.
Red Alert Vehicles:
Freightliners
Isuzu FTR and FVR range
Hino 700 and 500 range
Internationals
Volvo
MAN
TATA Tippers
Nissan UD
Quion
Cargo:
Usual Fast Moving Consumables
Clothing
Baby Formula
Tyres
Food
Modus Operandi mostly still Blue Light Vehicles impersonating SAPS and "Hitch Hikers"
Precautions:
1. Fit independent Tracking to both your Horse and Trailers.
2. Ensure your tracking is monitored 24/7/365.
3. Fit your vehicle with monitored Dashcams.
4. Fit your vehicles with monitored Panic Buttons and instruct your drivers to use it even if in the slightest doubt.
5. Instruct your drivers not to pick up hitch hikers. Make it a dismissible offense.
6. Instruct your drivers to use only safe truck stops.
7. Ensure off-route alarms are set and monitored on your tracking.
8. Do not employ drivers unless you have thoroughly checked their background, previous employment and criminal record. Specifically check if they have been hijacked before.
9. Avoid high risk areas as far as possible.
10. Ensure you are Insured, especially in case your driver is involved.
