Did you know?

The majority of bees species in the world and in South Africa are solitary bees.

How do they differ from honey bees?
- They do not live in a hive, serve a queen or make honey or wax.
- They are far better pollinators than honey bees, and pollinate up to 80% of all flowering plants and 75% of vegetables, fruits and nuts.
- They are not aggressive, and are usually stingless.
- They come in all sizes, colour and shapes.

A Langstroth Beehive is made of different components.

First, there is a brood chamber - the bottom box. The brood refers to the eggs, larvae, and pupae of honeybees. The brood chamber is where the queen lays the eggs and where they are cared for until they hatch. The Brood chamber contains 9 to 10 brood frame. The bees build their comb on the frame, and the queen lays eggs in the cells of the comb - hence the name "brood frame". Some of the cells will also be used to store pollen and honey to feed the eggs.

Then on top of the brood chamber, comes the Super Chamber (short for Superstructure). This is where the honey is stored. The bees will build the honeycomb on the super frames, and this is the honey that is harvested for our consumption.

Generally, the Brood Chamber and the Super chamber are separated by a "queen excluder", which keeps the queen in the brood box but allows the bees to go in the super box to store honey.

Did you know?

South Africa has around 1000 varieties of bees, but only two indigenous honeybees, the Apis Mellifera Scutellata (referred to as the African Honey Bee - 1st Photo) and the Apis Mellifera Capensis (referred to as the Cape Honey Bee - 2nd Photo).

The African Honey Bee has more yellow stripes on her abdomen, whereas the Cape Honey Bee tends to have a darker body.

The Cape Honey Bees are only found in the Western Cape and part of the Eastern Cape, while the African Honey Bees are found in central and most of southern Africa, as well as Eastern Africa, all the way up to parts of Ethiopia.

It was in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic whilst lockdown was being enforced that the thought occurred:

"There must be more than this"

There must be a way that we can give back, that we can do something better than what we are doing now. There must be a way that we can work with nature, instead of taking from her.

But how, but when?

It was an enlightening moment, a moment of sanity in an otherwise insane situation.

The idea was simple, and there all along. It was a natural yet elusive idea, a typical situation of not seeing the woods for the trees.

Having started as Bee-Havers about 4 years previously, the answer was there all the time. In that moment, we realised that we needed to change from being Bee-Havers to Bee-Keepers, we needed to educate, supply, support and inspire others to follow in our dream.
