🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA: Trails and activities suspended

Garden Route National Park has suspended multiple hiking trails, water-based activities, and accommodation facilities from June 3. An Orange Level 8 weather warning was issued by the South African Weather Service. According to SANParks, all hikers on the Otter Trail were evacuated from the Tsitsikamma section, while trails in Storms River Mouth, Wilderness, Diepwalle, and Harkerville were closed until June 5 due to safety concerns. Power outages are also affecting Nature’s Valley and Bloukrans. Travellers planning visits to the park should check conditions before departure, as further weather-related disruptions remain possible.

🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA: National park roads closed

Access within Karoo National Park has been severely disrupted after heavy and persistent rainfall forced the closure of all internal roads. According to SANParks, from June 4 only the main rest camp remains accessible but all other roads inside the park are closed until further notice. The closure may affect self-drive visitors, sightseeing activities and access to attractions within the park.

🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA: N3 closures to disrupt traffic

Motorists travelling between Durban and Johannesburg, including traffic routing to King Shaka International Airport, should expect significant delays during planned N3 closures in June, according to itraffic. Rolling bi-directional closures between Ashburton and New England interchanges are scheduled on June 2, 4 and 9 from 15:00 to 15:30 for blasting operations and debris clearance. A separate overnight closure between the Armitage Road and Cedara interchanges will take place from 20:00 on June 6 until 04:30 on June 7 for luminance testing. Traffic will be diverted via the R103, where congestion is expected.

🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA: Franschhoek Pass closed indefinitely

The Franschhoek Pass in the Western Cape has been closed to all traffic since May 15 following severe storm damage caused by heavy rainfall and flooding. According to the Western Cape Government, multiple mudslides, rockfalls and bridge damage have made the route unsafe for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. The scenic pass links Franschhoek with Villiersdorp and the Overberg region. Travellers heading between Franschhoek, Hermanus and surrounding areas should expect longer travel times as alternative routes are being used.

There will be widespread road closures and transport disruptions across Green Point, Sea Point, the CBD, Woodstock, Observatory and Southern Suburbs from May 22-24 ahead of and during the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on May 24. Major routes affected include Helen Suzman Boulevard, Beach Road, Nelson Mandela Boulevard and Main Road according to the City of Cape Town. Parking restrictions will be in effect and there will be disruptions to the MyCiTi bus route. Shuttle services and park-and-ride facilities will operate for runners and spectators.

Severe weather has forced temporary closures across Table Mountain National Park, affecting key tourist sites and hiking routes. According to SANParks, the Forest Link walkway at Boulders Penguin Colony, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, Cecilia Forest, Constantia Nek, Tokai trails, Oudekraal Picnic Site, and Newlands Picnic Site are closed due to flooding. SANParks urged visitors to follow all safety signage and official instructions.

Selective reopenings are under way across the Garden Route National Park following recent storm damage. SANParks confirmed that the Storms River Mouth restaurant, Mouth Trail, and suspension bridge in Tsitsikamma have reopened, while hiking routes, including the Otter Trail, are closed. Nature’s Valley Camp is still shut due to water and electricity outages and recreational water activities in Wilderness are suspended.
