Transnet National Ports Authority is a division of Transnet SOC Limited and is mandatedto control and manage all eight commercial ports on the 2954km South African coastline. The National Ports Authority is responsible for the safe, effective and efficient economic functioning of the national port system, which it manages in a landlord capacity. It provides port infrastructure and marine services at the eight commercial seaports in South Africa – Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Ngqura. As the naamsa conference concludes today, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) recently welcomed a delegation of automotive and logistics industry leaders to the Port of Durban, extending industry engagement beyond the conference and providing an opportunity to showcase the Port’s strategic role in South Africa’s automotive value chain.

The delegation comprised Mr Tony Lui, CEO of Chery; Loki, Head of Logistics; Neel Hariram, Strategic Director; and Zain Hassin of CDK Logistics.

The visit coincides with a significant milestone for the Port of Durban’s automotive sector. During the 2025/26 financial year, the Port handled 702,000 fully built-up units (FBUs), up from 531,000 in the previous year, representing a 26% year-on-year increase.

As a critical gateway for automotive imports and exports, TNPA remains committed to strengthening industry collaboration, enhancing supply chain efficiency and supporting the sector’s continued growth.

Yesterday's lease-signing agreement between Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and Freeport Saldanha marked a significant milestone in advancing investment-led growth in the Port of Saldanha and the broader region.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Director-General for Maritime Transport at the Department of Transport, Mthunzi Madiya, highlighted the importance of investment, industrialisation and collaboration in creating jobs and driving economic development.

The agreement reinforces Saldanha Bay's strategic role in South Africa's logistics and industrial ecosystem and is expected to support infrastructure development, attract new investment and unlock opportunities that contribute to long-term economic growth and competitiveness.

Delivering the keynote address at today’s signing ceremony in Saldanha Bay, Transnet SOC Ltd Group Chief Operating Officer Solly Letsoalo emphasised the broader significance of the agreement:

“The lease agreement between TNPA and Freeport Saldanha extends far beyond the boundaries of a land transaction. This agreement is about unlocking opportunity. It is about strengthening South Africa's logistics network and industrial development and, most importantly, advancing inclusive economic growth through strategic partnerships and infrastructure-led development”.

Aligned with Transnet's Reinvent for Growth strategy, the agreement reflects the organisation's focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving operational performance and collaborating with industry partners to unlock capacity across the logistics network.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and Freeport Saldanha have signed a 25-year lease agreement to unlock strategic industrial development opportunities within the Port of Saldanha, strengthening South Africa's export competitiveness and supporting inclusive economic growth.

The agreement covers approximately 55 hectares in the Southern Precinct of the Port of Saldanha, providing the long-term certainty required to attract investment and support the expansion of industrial activities linked to South Africa's only port-based Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Within the agreement, Freeport Saldanha's investment pipeline is valued at approximately R6.9 billion and spans several key sectors.

Today, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is signing a landmark 25-year lease agreement with Freeport Saldanha that will unlock opportunities for investment, industrial development and economic growth within the Port of Saldanha Bay.

This milestone marks a strategic enabling transaction that unlocks port-linked commercial opportunities in the Southern Precinct and strengthens collaboration between TNPA and South Africa's only port-based Special Economic Zone.

In attendance today is the Deputy Director General of Maritime at the Department of Transport, Mthunzi Madiya, Transnet SOC Ltd Group Chief Operating Officer, Solly Letsoalo, officials from the Western Cape provincial government, Members of the Mayoral Council of Saldanha Bay Municipality and Freeport Saldanha Executives, investors, partners and the members of the media.

[Media Statement] Transnet has issued a Request for Qualification (RFQ) to commence the selection process for a strategic partner for the Ngqura Manganese Export Corridor (NMEC) Private Sector Participation (PSP) project for 25 years.

The NMEC project forms part of Transnet's growth strategy to improve freight network performance, support export growth and enhance the competitiveness of South Africa's logistics system. The corridor is expected to play a key role in strengthening the country's manganese export value chain.
