We Recently were contacted to assist a customer in St Francis Eastern Cape, where he has a boat winch system that lifts his boat out of the water when he is not using it to stop sea life from growing on the boat and the motor…
The job : the winch stopped working one day and his boat was stuck up in the air, he called us and asked us to please assist with lowering his boat into the water so he could at least make use of it, this was done by installing a block and tackle system onto the boat while it was hanging in mid air, take the tension off the exisiting winch and then remove the winch cables and lower it down into the water, after that we needed to remove the 100kg+ winch off the wall outside the building and take it in to a repair agent to get checked out, getting that winch down was one thing but putting it back up was another challenge completly, the area we worked in did not allow for the use of forklifts or crane trucks or mobile cranes to be able to work on it so we had to resort to good old fashioned manual labor and the power of mechanical advantage .. ( pulleys)
We completed the job, the customer was happy with the result, he now has a working winch and he can make use of his boat when he wants to,
We rely so much on cranes and forklifts to lift things that we often forget how much things actually weigh, this winch was heavy, and in another environment we proably would have used mechaical lifting equipment ( forklifts) to do the job, it would have made life easier, but we got it back into place using ropes and pulleys from our experience with rigging. Job well done team
