A Nostalgic Piece – The Ferryman’s Hotel, Port Alfred
Port Alfred, gracefully nestled along the banks of the Kowie River, tells stories of ships, salt air, and the steady rhythm of a river town shaped by the sea. Once a bustling hub of trade, its wharf welcomed goods and travelers from distant shores — a meeting point of adventure and commerce that brought life to the sleepy Eastern Cape coastline.
In those early days, when fishermen cast their nets at dawn and the river was the town’s lifeline, a small ferry carried people and produce across the Kowie. Its journey paused at St Mary’s Well — then the only source of fresh water in the area — a stop that became a place of gathering and connection.
It was here, in 1895, that Heinrich Samuel, Port Alfred’s last ferryman, built a grand establishment — the Cove Hotel. Over the years it became the Langdon, and later, the much-loved Ferryman’s Hotel. Through changing times and countless stories, this gracious old building has stood watch over the river — a timeless landmark echoing the spirit of the town’s pioneering past.
Now, this iconic property, rich in heritage and character, is being offered for sale — a rare opportunity to own a remarkable piece of Port Alfred’s history and potential.
