The fork-tailed drongo. Considered a bee eating scourge to many beekeeper. A mindful consideration . They visit hives regularly only when nature shows the season change from late autumn to winter . They disappear when late spring turns to summer. They eat very few bees. They are one of natures seasonal barometers, like the migrating swallows. No more ignorant beekeepers shooting them please !!! All Nature is connected. This cat, ( in pic)), Belle, is Jasmine's cat and self appointed guardian of the hives . She has never been stung. The bees land on her periodically to rest, never sting. She sometimes rests on top of the hives. The drongos get very few bee meals as she patrols up n down the hives. She has never and most likely never will catch a drongo, I hope. All Nature is entwined in a magical thread. Life .

Synthetic petro-chemical surfboard wax is killing coral reefs and sea life. Even banned in the Maldives and parts of Indonesia. So the truely caring surfers are now turning to enviro friendly options. Tried and tested by some of our best local surfers , our Honeychild surfwax meets all the criteria to be super non slip and totally bio-degradeable . Gratitude to Mother Nature

Owen and Zach safely and gently remove a swarm from someones garden, watch how the bees stream into their new home after the queen. Removals from places unsuitable to inhabitants is a crucial part of Honeychilds work, ensuring the bees are not fumigated and end in safety. We are so grateful to work with these phenomenal creatures and for humans who call us to remove instead of killing the bees! Have a bee-autiful week everyone 🐝

Meet Zach Prins, the Honey Prins.

Zach has been working with Honeychild for two years, he is Owen, our head beekeepers, right hand. Master of queen spotting and soccer playing, Zach recently harvested his first batch of honey from his own hive and is now selling it in his local community.
He has become an astute and knowledgeable beekeeper, great at waggling like a bee and keeping children highly entertained. Soon to strengthen his skills as a facilitator and educator!
Come and say hi when you pop around at the Honeychild shop in Rheenendal, he might let you try some of his honey!

Last week Friday the team at Honeychild were graced by the presence of 35 (or so) home schooled children from Mosselbay and George along with a troop of excited parents. The group was split in two with little ones first and the older kids after, an hour and a half of bee business! We chatted about bee biology, lifecycles, safety, the nitty gritty of beekeeping and rounded the talking off with holistic thinking and ecosystem awareness. The kids got to peer through the windows as members of the team held frames of bees and brood for a few minutes for real time observation of baby bees hatching! This time things differed slightly engaging the children with a few minutes to be creative and draw their representation of a honeybee before looking at simple bee anatomy and labelling their own drawing. We tasted honey, danced like bees, swarmed across the centre and laughed at the antics of the animated facilitators! Honey on tap meant parents and kids could bring their own jars and buy any amount of honey. Every child went home with a the gift of seed, the greatest gift of all! A packet of seeds to plant for bee forage, introducing them to other pollinators and encouraging the youth to learn to grow their own food. A bright day of happiness was had by all!
Thank you for visiting us 🐝
