2018 waiting on the transkaroo.....if I remember well the train was 5 minutes early, considering the fact that we were used to the idea of it always being late. Also what i had picked up over the years of me travelling between Kimberley and Johannesburg with the train was that, the Johannesburg bound transkaroo that arrived Saturday midnight (scheduled time 03:45) was that it always arrived in time in Kimberley and in Johannesburg. This is now if you had to compare it with all the other scheduled transkaroo that operated during the week heading the same direction. Well this is according to my experience with it because I only used to take the Saturday one, and the only train we used to cross was the Rovos Rail and nothing else. Or maybe this was just my luck with the train. Or maybe lack of traffic on the mainline on a Saturday?

'Man & Machine'

Driver Les Weideman applies the finishing touches to Class 15CA No. 2850 - his “baby.”

As the old saying goes, “A beautiful lady can’t go out in public without her jewellery.” And so, here Les adds a few decorative ornaments to the smokebox, giving 2850 that final touch of elegance before heading out.

Les and No. 2850 - now affectionately named “Leska”, after his daughter - share a long and very special history.

It was aboard No. 2850, during her days with the South African Railways, that Les learnt his trade. From those early days on the footplate to today, the locomotive has remained very much a part of his life.

For Les, 2850 isn't simply a locomotive. She is a piece of his history, his passion and, quite literally, a part of his blood.
