🌍 LOGISTICS WATCH | What’s Ahead for Global Freight?

Global logistics is heading into another important period, with geopolitical risks, port congestion, seasonal demand and major changes in transport networks all having the potential to affect international cargo movements.

Here are some of the developments we’re watching:

🚢 DURBAN PORT UNDER PRESSURE

South Africa’s Durban Gateway Terminal is currently experiencing significant operational disruption, with freight industry bodies calling for an urgent recovery plan covering vessel waiting times, terminal productivity, equipment availability, yard utilisation, truck turnaround and rail evacuation.

For South African importers and exporters, continued disruption at Durban can have a direct impact on transit times, cargo availability and inland transport planning.

🗓️CHINA'S HOLIDAY PERIOD IS APPROACHING

China's Mid-Autumn Festival takes place from 25–27 September, followed shortly afterwards by the National Day Golden Week from 1–7 October.

These holidays can affect factory production, trucking, warehouse operations, documentation and freight capacity. Businesses moving cargo from China should therefore be planning shipments well in advance rather than waiting for the holiday period to approach.

✈ A NEW GENERATION OF FREIGHTERS

The aviation industry is also looking ahead.

Airbus is preparing for the first flight of its A350F freighter, currently expected towards the end of September. The aircraft is designed specifically for the global cargo market and represents another step in the development of more efficient long-haul freighter capacity.

⚓ SHIPPING CAPACITY REMAINS DYNAMIC

Ocean carriers continue adjusting capacity in response to changing demand, including the use of blank sailings on some routes. At the same time, security concerns around major maritime corridors continue to influence routing decisions and operational planning.

📦 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES?

The logistics environment reinforces the importance of planning before a shipment becomes urgent.

Businesses moving international cargo should be considering:

✔️ Booking freight capacity early
✔️ Allowing additional time for potential delays
✔️ Reviewing alternative routes and gateways
✔️ Planning around international holidays
✔️ Monitoring port and airport conditions
✔️ Maintaining flexibility between transport modes
✔️ Working with logistics partners who can respond when conditions change

The most effective supply chains aren't simply built around the fastest route. They're built around having options.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we continue to monitor developments across global freight, aviation, ports and transport networks to help our clients make informed logistics decisions.

🌍 When the world changes, your logistics strategy needs to change with it.

LOGISTICS WATCH | Global Freight Networks Adapt to a More Uncertain Trading Environment

Global logistics continues to evolve as geopolitical uncertainty, changing trade routes and shifting transport capacity reshape the way goods move around the world.

One of the key areas being closely watched is the Strait of Hormuz, where ongoing regional tensions continue to affect commercial shipping activity. Disruption around major maritime chokepoints can have a much wider impact on global supply chains, influencing routing, transit times, fuel costs, insurance, vessel availability and delivery schedules.

🚢 LOOKING BEYOND TRADITIONAL ROUTES

As established trade corridors face greater uncertainty, logistics providers are increasingly exploring alternative routes, gateways and multimodal solutions to keep cargo moving.

The question for businesses is no longer simply:
“What is the normal route?”

It is:
“What are our alternatives if the normal route stops working?”

💻 LOGISTICS IS BECOMING MORE CONNECTED

At the same time, major logistics companies continue investing in infrastructure and digital technology to improve capacity, visibility and supply chain flexibility.

From digital freight booking and shipment tracking to expanded logistics networks, technology is increasingly becoming an important part of how businesses manage international cargo.

🌍 NEW TRADE ROUTES, NEW POSSIBILITIES

Interest in alternative international shipping corridors is also growing, with emerging routes offering potential alternatives to traditional Asia–Europe trade lanes.

While these routes still face significant operational, geopolitical and regulatory challenges, their development highlights an important shift in global logistics:

The routes used to move goods tomorrow may not be the same routes we rely on today.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES?

For importers, exporters and supply chain managers, flexibility is becoming increasingly important.

✔️ Consider alternative routing options
✔️ Plan capacity requirements in advance
✔️ Build multimodal options into your logistics strategy
✔️ Monitor potential changes in transit times and costs
✔️ Maintain strong shipment visibility
✔️ Have contingency plans ready before disruption occurs

The most resilient supply chains aren't necessarily those that avoid disruption.

They're the ones that can adapt when disruption happens.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we continue to monitor developments across international freight, aviation, transport and global supply chains to help our clients make informed decisions in an increasingly complex logistics environment.

When conditions change, the right logistics partner helps you find the way forward.

✈️ BEHIND THE MOVEMENT | What Happens Before Cargo Flies?

When a shipment takes off, it can look like the simplest part of the journey.

But behind every successful airfreight movement is a carefully coordinated process that begins long before the aircraft leaves the ground.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we consider every stage of the movement:

📦 1. Cargo Assessment
We assess the dimensions, weight, nature and handling requirements of the cargo.

🌍 2. Routing
We determine the most suitable origin, destination and connection points for the movement.

✈️ 3. Aircraft & Capacity
Available capacity is assessed to identify the most appropriate airline and service for the shipment.

📄 4. Documentation
Commercial documents, customs requirements and any specialist documentation need to be prepared and verified.

🛡️ 5. Packing & Compliance
Cargo must be appropriately packed, secured and prepared in accordance with the applicable requirements.

🚛 6. Final Delivery
The journey doesn't end when the aircraft lands. We coordinate the onward movement to the final destination.

The flight is only one part of an airfreight movement.
The real work begins long before take-off.

At Breakthrough Solutions, careful planning, experience and coordination come together to create reliable logistics solutions for every movement.

Moving Freight. Building Partnerships. Delivering Confidence.

🌍 DID YOU KNOW? | The Hidden Complexity of Global Freight

A shipment may look simple from the outside:

A → B

But behind a single international shipment is often an entire network of people, companies, systems and regulations working together.

✈️ Airlines managing flight capacity and schedules
🚢 Shipping lines moving cargo across international trade lanes
🚛 Transport operators handling collections and final delivery
🛃 Customs authorities ensuring regulatory compliance
📄 Documentation teams managing the paperwork behind the movement
📦 Warehouses handling storage, consolidation and distribution
🏗️ Specialist handlers managing complex or sensitive cargo
🌍 Multiple countries and regulations influencing how the shipment can move

Every part of the chain needs to work together for cargo to arrive safely, efficiently and on time.

The customer's shipment may be one movement.
Behind the scenes, it can be an entire network working together.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we coordinate the moving parts to create reliable logistics solutions tailored to the requirements of each shipment.

Because good logistics isn't just about the destination. It's about everything it takes to get there.

💡 LOGISTICS INSIGHT | What Makes a Good Logistics Partner?

In logistics, choosing a service provider isn't simply about finding someone who can move cargo from A to B.

A truly effective logistics partner understands that every shipment comes with its own requirements, risks and deadlines—and knows how to plan for what happens along the way.

A strong logistics partner should be able to:

✓ Anticipate challenges before they become problems
✓ Develop practical solutions around your cargo and requirements
✓ Provide reliable communication throughout the movement
✓ Coordinate multiple transport modes and service providers
✓ Adapt quickly when circumstances change
✓ Understand your business, not just your shipment

Because sometimes the original route doesn't work. Sometimes capacity changes. Sometimes cargo requires specialist handling. And sometimes the unexpected happens.

That's when experience, planning and the right network make the difference.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we believe logistics is about more than transportation. It's about creating certainty in an unpredictable environment and giving our clients confidence that their cargo is in capable hands.

Good logistics moves cargo.
Great logistics moves your business forward.

🌍 LOGISTICS WATCH | Global Logistics Enters a New Era of Rerouting, Risk & Resilience

The global logistics industry is entering another period of significant change, with new trade routes emerging, export patterns shifting and digital risks becoming increasingly important for supply chain operators.

🚢 ARCTIC SHIPPING MOVES CLOSER TO THE MAINSTREAM

One of the most notable developments this month is the launch of a scheduled China–Europe container service through the Arctic's Northern Sea Route. The new route is designed to significantly shorten the journey between Asia and Europe and provides an alternative to traditional maritime corridors. Russia has also reported strong growth in Arctic oil shipments to Asia this year.

While the route remains seasonal and faces considerable environmental, navigational and geopolitical challenges, its development signals that the geography of global trade could be changing.

🚗 CHINA'S EXPORT BOOM IS PUTTING PRESSURE ON VEHICLE LOGISTICS

China's automotive exports are accelerating rapidly. July exports reached approximately 923,000 vehicles, up 88% year-on-year, as manufacturers increasingly target markets across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

The surge is creating a new logistical challenge: there are not enough specialised car carriers to accommodate the growth. Industry reports indicate that vehicle-carrier freight rates have risen sharply, with some manufacturers turning to conventional container shipping as an alternative.

For logistics providers, this represents both increased demand and a growing need for flexible multimodal solutions.

💻 CYBERSECURITY IS NOW A LOGISTICS ISSUE

Physical disruption is no longer the only threat to global supply chains.

A cyberattack on CEVA Logistics disrupted operations at eight European warehouses, resulting in shipment delays for customers. The incident highlights how heavily modern logistics depends on interconnected digital systems—and how a cyber incident at one logistics provider can quickly affect retailers, manufacturers and consumers across multiple markets.

For supply chain managers, cybersecurity and business continuity are becoming increasingly intertwined.

📊 THE BIGGER PICTURE

The logistics industry is responding to a world where traditional routes can no longer be taken for granted.

New corridors are being explored. Export markets are shifting. Digital infrastructure is becoming just as important as physical infrastructure.

For importers and exporters, the priority is increasingly flexibility, visibility and contingency planning.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we continue to monitor developments across global trade, aviation and logistics to help our clients anticipate change, manage risk and keep their supply chains moving.

Global trade is changing. The logistics strategy needs to change with it.

⚠️ LOGISTICS WATCH | Severe Weather Disrupts South African Transport

South Africa is experiencing a significant winter weather system this week, with heavy snowfall, damaging winds, severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfall affecting several parts of the country. The conditions are already creating challenges for road transport and regional supply chains.

The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are among the areas experiencing disruptive snowfall, while severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of Gauteng, the Free State, North West and the eastern interior. Coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal are also facing strong winds and rough seas.

For the logistics sector, severe weather can have immediate operational consequences:

🚛 Road freight: Snow, ice, flooding and poor visibility can create hazardous driving conditions and delays. Several routes, including sections of the N3, R617, R74, N6 and N9, have been affected, with some closures reported.

🚢 Port & coastal operations: Strong winds and high waves along the KwaZulu-Natal coast may disrupt shipping activity, particularly at smaller ports and harbours.

📦 Supply chains: Delays on key transport corridors can have a knock-on effect on collection schedules, deliveries, warehouse planning and time-sensitive cargo.

✈️ Air & road connections: Disruptions to ground transport can also affect the movement of cargo to and from airports, even where flight operations themselves remain unaffected.

For businesses moving cargo during periods of severe weather, flexibility and contingency planning are essential. Allowing additional transit time, monitoring route conditions and maintaining communication between logistics providers, drivers, suppliers and customers can help minimise disruption.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we continue to monitor developments affecting South Africa's transport network and encourage our clients to plan carefully around weather-related risks.

When conditions change, the logistics plan needs to change with them.

Stay safe, monitor official warnings from the South African Weather Service, and avoid unnecessary travel through affected areas.

NATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY | Celebrating the Women Who Keep the World Moving

Behind every shipment delivered, every aircraft dispatched, every port connected, and every supply chain that keeps businesses running, there is a legacy of remarkable women whose innovation transformed the world of logistics and travel.

From Emily Warren Roebling, whose engineering leadership helped complete the Brooklyn Bridge and revolutionised transportation infrastructure, to Lillian Gilbreth, whose pioneering work in industrial engineering reshaped efficiency, workflow, and modern operations management, women have long been at the forefront of innovation.

Trailblazers like Bessie Coleman, the first African American and Native American woman to earn an international pilot's licence, challenged barriers in aviation and inspired generations of women to pursue careers in flight and aerospace. Meanwhile, Ann Tsukamoto's innovations in medical science have supported global healthcare supply chains, demonstrating how logistics extends far beyond transport—it connects people, industries, and lives.

Today, women continue to lead across aviation, freight forwarding, customs, warehousing, supply chain management, engineering, and transport—driving innovation, solving complex challenges, and shaping the future of global trade.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we recognise that diversity of thought, leadership, and expertise strengthens our industry. We celebrate the women who have paved the way, those making an impact today, and the next generation of innovators who will continue to move the world forward.

This International Women's Day, we honour every woman whose vision, resilience, and determination help keep global logistics in motion.

Happy International Women's Day.

🌍 LOGISTICS WATCH | Global Trade Faces New Operational Challenges

The international logistics sector continues to navigate a rapidly changing environment as geopolitical tensions, evolving trade patterns, and shifting supply chain strategies reshape the movement of goods across the globe.

One of the most significant developments this week is the continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Reports indicate that military activity and renewed threats to shipping routes have increased uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade corridors. While commercial shipping continues, the heightened security risk has placed pressure on global energy markets and raised concerns about potential impacts on shipping schedules and operating costs.

Meanwhile, the conflict in Eastern Europe continues to affect global commodity logistics. Recent attacks on infrastructure linked to Ukraine's Black Sea export network have reduced grain export capacity, creating additional pressure on agricultural supply chains and increasing logistical complexity for exporters serving international markets.

Beyond geopolitical developments, the logistics industry continues to adapt to structural changes. Businesses are placing greater emphasis on diversified supply chains, strategic inventory planning, and resilient transport networks to reduce exposure to disruption. Investment in integrated logistics services, digital visibility tools, and multimodal transport solutions remains a key priority as organisations seek greater flexibility in an increasingly unpredictable market.

For importers, exporters, and supply chain managers, the message remains clear: proactive planning and strong logistics partnerships are essential to maintaining business continuity in a dynamic global environment.

At Breakthrough Solutions, we continue to monitor international developments and work closely with our clients to provide reliable, informed, and tailored logistics solutions that keep supply chains moving.
