We had the privilege of spending time with some of the learners at Sedi-Laka Primary School Official Sedilaka Primary School in Midrand for World Environment Day, and we left with full hearts.
Our Recycling Depot Manager Sarah Poggenpoel led the session, bringing objects the children already live with, bottles, containers, packaging from the family kitchen, to show that recycling starts at home, with the things already in their hands.
You could see it on their faces when it clicked. And when the Q&A opened, the room came alive. Hands up, children building on each other’s answers, correcting each other, finishing each other’s sentences. The enthusiasm and eagerness to learn in that room was something else entirely.
We were warmly welcomed by Principal Mzamo Mazwi and coordinator Nomusa, and joined on the day by the Department of Environmental Health, who were planting trees across the school grounds. The atmosphere was warm, active, and exactly what World Environment Day should feel like.
To Principal Mazwi, Nomusa, and every learner who shot their hand up that day, thank you for having us. We will be back.
