Cabinet has backed the separation of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) from Transnet, supporting a move towards a stand-alone, state-owned ports authority.

The proposed structure could give TNPA greater independence to strengthen investment capability, improve infrastructure development and reinvest port revenue directly into the port system. Cabinet has also approved an investigation into whether a South African development finance institution could take a minority equity position.
