Transnet has strengthened its commitment to developing future talent and driving innovation through the signing of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership that will promote collaboration in research, skills development, and innovation, while helping to prepare graduates for meaningful careers in South Africa's transport, logistics and supply chain sectors.

The MoU was signed by Transnet Group Chief Procurement Officer, Vuledzani Nemukula, and the University of Johannesburg's Executive Dean of the College of Business and Economics, Professor Tankiso Moloi. It reflects a shared commitment to building a stronger pipeline of skilled professionals equipped to meet the evolving needs of the industry.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the university's Kingsway campus, Nemukula highlighted that while Transnet's core mandate is to reduce the cost of doing business, the organisation also has an important responsibility to contribute to South Africa's economic growth by creating opportunities for young people.

"Partnerships such as this are essential in ensuring that graduates enter workplaces that are ready to nurture their skills, while also helping industry access the talent needed to support future growth," he said.

The partnership will provide work-integrated learning opportunities for UJ students across a range of disciplines that align with Transnet's operations.
The collaboration extends beyond student placements. The partnership will also focus on developing practical case studies and applied research that address national priorities and industry challenges.

Another key area of collaboration will be the co-creation of curricula, executive education programmes and specialised training that align with Transnet's current and future skills requirements. Short learning programmes and certifications will explore emerging areas such as blockchain, digital supply chains, green logistics and other technologies shaping the future of the transport and logistics sector.

The agreement also provides for pilot projects, innovation internships, graduate placements and learnerships designed to encourage innovation-based learning while strengthening capacity across the industry. Both organisations have committed to identifying additional opportunities for collaboration and to sharing technical knowledge in support of their mutual objectives.

As Transnet continues its renewal journey, partnerships such as this will play a significant role in developing the next generation of professionals who will help shape the future of logistics and drive economic growth for the country.

Today, Transnet Group Chief Executive Adv Michelle Phillips visited the Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) Eastern Region North Corridor Annual Maintenance Shutdown in the Richards Bay area, reaffirming Transnet's commitment to rehabilitating and modernising critical rail infrastructure in support of a more reliable, efficient and resilient freight rail network.

Joining the visit was Deputy Director-General for Rail at the Department of Transport, Mr Ngwako Makaepea, alongside Transnet Group Chief Operating Officer, Solly Letsoalo, and other TRIM executive members. The delegation was hosted by TRIM Chief Executive Moshe Motlohi, who set the scene by providing context on the strategic importance of the annual maintenance shutdown and its contribution to network recovery and long-term operational sustainability.

The Eastern Region North Corridor Maintenance Shutdown, which runs from 21 July to 1 August 2026, forms part of Transnet's ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing the reliability, safety and efficiency of one of the country's most strategic freight rail corridors. During the leadership site visit, the delegation engaged with project teams and inspected several key work sites where critical infrastructure upgrades, systems enhancements and track maintenance activities are currently underway.

Among the projects visited was the Signalling Modernisation Project between uMunywana and eLubana, which focuses on replacing ageing signalling infrastructure to improve safety, strengthen network reliability and enhance operational efficiency. The delegation also viewed progress on a range of maintenance and rehabilitation interventions designed to improve asset performance and ensure the long-term sustainability of the corridor.

The rehabilitation of the rail network is a key pillar of the organisation's Reinvent for Growth Strategy, which is focused on restoring network capability, improving service reliability, increasing freight volumes and creating a logistics system that supports South Africa's economic growth ambitions. Planned maintenance shutdowns such as this provide a critical opportunity to undertake large-scale infrastructure interventions that will strengthen operational performance and position the network for future growth.

Through sustained investment in infrastructure renewal and maintenance, Transnet continues to build a safer, more reliable and more competitive rail network that serves customers, enables trade and contributes to the country's economic development.
