Today, Transnet hosted a special employee and management engagement at its 96 Rissik head office in Johannesburg to confront the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and reinforce the organisation's commitment to creating safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces.
The engagement brought together executive leadership, including Group Chief Executive Adv. Michelle Phillips, Chief People and Learning Officer Tumi Matsheka and members of the Executive Committee, to address the growing impact of GBV on individuals, families, communities and workplaces across South Africa.
As a large organisation operating across both urban and rural areas of the country, Transnet recognises that safety extends beyond its operational environment. The wellbeing of employees, their families and the communities served by the organisation remains a shared responsibility and an integral part of building a caring and productive society.
In a heartfelt address, Adv. Phillips emphasised that GBV is not only a societal issue but also a workplace issue, with the effects of violence often following victims into their places of work through trauma, fear and anxiety.
She challenged employees to embrace this year's awareness message of "Everyday Activism: Act. Report. Support.", stressing that meaningful change begins with individual accountability and daily actions.
"We cannot allow our mothers, sisters, daughters and colleagues to be harmed. There is no excuse for violence, abuse, intimidation or harassment in any form. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect," she said.
The engagement served as a powerful reminder that ending gender-based violence is everyone's responsibility and that a safer society begins with the choices we make every day, at work, at home and in our communities.
