(WATCH) Aviation101’s This Is Africa: Part 4

After twenty-five days, countless flights, three countries and more adventures than we ever could have planned for, the African flying adventure of Josh Flowers and Chelsea Smith of Aviation101, along with Chris Lammert and Keelyn Costello, has reached its final chapter. But there’s still plenty of Africa left to explore.

They continue across Namibia by air, from remote desert camps and towering dunes to the Atlantic coast and the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park. First, though, they need fuel.

And when you’re travelling with four aircraft in the middle of Namibia, getting 400 litres of petrol from a roadside station into all of them becomes an adventure all on its own.

Along the way, they meet two people who have never flown before — and get the chance to give them an entirely new view of the place they call home. After one last night around the campfire, it’s time to say goodbye to their friends and continue the journey on their own.

They follow Namibia’s spectacular coastline, fly past the Eduard Bohlen shipwreck and make their way to Swakopmund before turning inland toward the private airstrip at Okutala.

Then comes one final unforgettable day: exploring Etosha National Park from the ground, surrounded by elephants, zebras, and the quiet moments that make you stop, watch and simply take it all in.

And somewhere between the desert, the wildlife, the friendships and the endless skies, the realisation sets in, says Josh.

"This was never just a flying trip. It was a childhood dream come true. Twenty-five days across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia. New friendships. Incredible places. Countless memories. And an experience Chels and I could never have imagined when we first packed our bags.

To everyone who welcomed us along the way, flew with us, shared their homes, their stories, and their country — thank you. And to everyone who followed the journey from home, thank you for coming along for the ride. Now it’s time to head home."

Our Sling Formation Team had an action-packed weekend at Africa Aerospace and Defence - AAD 2026 at Air Force Base Waterkloof, putting on a show in the sky and on the ground – making sure Slings were impossible to miss!

We feel incredibly honoured to have shared the skies with the likes of the Hueys, Hawks, Rooivalks, a Gripen and the Flying Lions.

(WATCH) Aviation101’s This Is Africa: Part 3

Beyond the familiar...

After reaching Cape Town in Part 2, we get Josh Flowers and Chelsea Smith of Aviation101, along with Chris Lammert and Keelyn Costello, back in the air, reunite with friends, and point our Sling aircraft north toward a new country: Namibia.

From Stellenbosch, they cross the mountains and make their way to Tankwa Karoo for the The Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race. There’s formation flying, bike riding, big fires, and a festive night of brandy and singing with the Sling Team. The group then moves on and spends the night at the farm of Sling Hing Wing owner, Matt Cohen.

As a flight of four aircraft, they cross into Namibia and begin exploring one of Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes. From the air and from the ground, they experience the vastness of Fish River Canyon before following James deeper into the desert toward a remote campsite.

But there’s one thing standing between them and a night beneath the African stars: an off-airport landing.

As the landscapes grow bigger and the familiar comforts grow fewer, the adventure becomes less about following a plan and more about embracing whatever comes next.

Because sometimes the most memorable part of flying isn't what happens in the air.

It’s what happens after the engine shuts down.

Distributor Spotlight: Aeroplane Builders BV 🇪🇸

We’re excited to welcome Huib van Engelen of Aeroplane Builders BV as the official Sling Distributor for Spain, Italy and Portugal! Huib’s journey into aviation is a story of turning a lifelong dream into reality.

From dreaming of flying as a young boy, to earning his pilot’s licence in 2021, and then taking on the challenge of building his very own Sling TSi — his passion for aviation has grown with every step. What started with a few boxes of aircraft parts arriving in September 2021 has now grown into something much bigger: helping other aviation enthusiasts turn their own aircraft-building dreams into reality.

Based at their facility in Benissa, Spain, Huib and his team offer Sling aircraft building kits and a Build Assist Programme for builders across Spain, Italy and Portugal. And there’s plenty happening in the hangar! A Sling TSi is already flying as a demo aircraft, while their Sling High Wing Taildragger is nearing completion.

Huib is also joined by a team of highly motivated young aircraft mechanic students, creating an environment where technical knowledge, practical experience, and a passion for aviation come together.

We’re thrilled to have Huib and his team representing Sling in Southern Europe and can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes them.

A Very Special Day At Tedderfield!

Last week, we were honoured to welcome two recipients of the Chris Burger Petro Jackson The Players' Fund, Koben and Miguel, to Sling HQ for flights in our Sling High Wing - a fun flip across the south of Johannesburg. With the Springboks vs All Blacks showdown just one day away, they even caught a glimpse of the Bokke training in FNB Stadium! A rugby fix and a flying fix in one morning…

For those who don't know them: the Players' Fund has stood behind South African rugby players who have suffered serious, life-changing injuries on the field since 1980. From wheelchairs and medical care to home adaptations, education, and long-term support, they make sure that when a player's rugby journey ends in the worst way, they and their families aren't left to face it alone.

Seeing the joy on their faces is exactly what "Taking You Places" means to us. Thank you to the Players' Fund team for what you do, and to our two guests for spending the morning with us. Go Bokke! 🇿🇦

(WATCH) Aviation101’s This Is Africa: Part 2

No borders. No customs. Just adventure.

After making it to Zimbabwe and taking on the Air Rally, Part 2 brings Josh Flowers and Chelsea Smith of Aviation101 back to where it all began — Sling HQ.

For once, there are no border crossings to navigate, no custom stops, and no major travel plans on the schedule. Just a quiet day at home. Naturally, that doesn't last long...

When Sling Chief Test Pilot, Riaan Denner, has an idea, you know things are about to get interesting.

In this episode, they take to the skies over Johannesburg for some banner towing, go behind the scenes at the incredible Jonker Sailplanes factory, make a completely unplanned stop to meet a very special young zebra, and then set off on the next major leg of the journey — heading south towards Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town.

Along the way, Chris Lammert and Keelyn Costello join the adventure, Chels and Josh get a little time to breathe, and the trip begins to settle into something different.

Less “We finally made it to Africa.”
More “This is how we're going to explore it.”
