TRANSIT CHAOS AT KAZUNGULA – BURS & ZRA RULES COLLIDE

Attention all cross-border truckers and logistics professionals!

BURS has introduced a 3-day Temporary Important Permit (TIP) for foreign trucks transiting through Botswana, valid only from port of entry to port of exit.

BUT here’s where it gets costly

🇿🇲 On the Zambian side: ZRA at Kazungula One Stop Border Post REFUSES entry to trucks without a T1 document. If you cross without it? Penalty: K4,000
🇧🇼 On the Botswana side: If you fail to exit Botswana within 3 days of entry, BURS hits you with a P5,000 penalty

The result? Massive congestion on the Botswana side.

Why? Because T1 release on the Zambian side can take up to 5 days or more. Trucks are stranded, waiting. Now they’re caught between two penalties.

🇿🇲 To make matters worse: ZRA does NOT allow trucks heading into Botswana to park and wait for Botswana docs on the Zambian side. Do it anyway? Penalty. So those trucks are also pushed back and held on the Botswana side.

This double-layered pressure is creating a backlog, frustrating drivers, and costing everyone time and money.

We need urgent dialogue between BURS and ZRA to align processes before this becomes a full-blown trade bottleneck.

Share to spread awareness. Drivers, stay informed and plan accordingly.

SA’s Trucking Industry Pledges to Prioritise Driver Safety and Wellness at Inaugural Symposium

The inaugural Truck Driver Safety and Wellness Symposium, hosted by the Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, marked a historic moment in the efforts to prioritise the well-being of South Africa’s truck drivers. Held on the 6th and 7th of March at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg, the symposium brought together over 220 truck drivers, industry stakeholders and representatives from the private and public sectors.

Themed "Your Wellness is Our Concern," the symposium underscored a collaborative partnership aimed at addressing the mental and physical health challenges faced by truck drivers in the country. Minister Chikunga, in her inaugural speech, emphasized the critical role of the road freight industry in driving economic growth, highlighting its impressive 48% growth over the past decade and its annual transportation of approximately 140 million tonnes of goods.

Quoting the United Nations' definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, Minister Chikunga reaffirmed the Department of Transport’s commitment to prioritising truck driver wellness. She described the symposium as a pivotal moment in the pursuit of enhancing truck driver wellness, aligning with the theme of Human Rights month, which focuses on advancing human dignity and equality.

The challenges facing truck drivers were brought into sharp focus during the symposium. Research conducted by the University of Witwatersrand revealed alarming statistics, indicating that many long-haul truck drivers in South Africa suffer from sleep deprivation and work excessively long hours, leading to fatigue-related accidents. Such challenges underscored the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to improve driver well-being and road safety.

Through interactive sessions, informative discussions and practical solutions, the event aimed to equip truck drivers with the necessary tools and support to prioritise their health and safety on the roads.

Key sponsors of the symposium, including Michelin Tyre Company South Africa and MICHELIN Connected Fleet, reiterated their commitment to promoting road safety and supporting truck drivers. Charl Lensley, B2B Director at Michelin, emphasized the importance of maintaining top-notch tires and ensuring drivers’ well-being for safer roads. Shivani Pillay, Country Manager of MICHELIN Connected Fleet South Africa, highlighted the importance of understanding transporters’ needs and providing solutions to enhance driver safety.

As the symposium concluded, it left are sounding message of commitment and collaboration in the pursuit of safer roads and healthier truck drivers. By addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by drivers and fostering partnerships between the public and private sectors, the symposium laid the groundwork for ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing truck driver safety and wellness across South Africa.
