BAW SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCHING A 92KW DIESEL TAXI

Getting a foothold in taxi industry

BAW vehicle is gaining traction in the local public transport environment.

Beijing Auto Works has been selling minibus-taxis in SA since 2013.

BAW’s 16-seater minibus, the Sasuka, has gradually gained traction in the local market, trading as is usually the case for new market entrants on price.

It is obvious to anyone who cares that the SA taxi industry is indispensible to our economy and society, but less so how providing transport to the least well off generates serious challenges when it comes to maintainance and safety.

BAW are of course well aware of this obstacle for taxi owners and have set about serving a niche in the market.

Their latest introduction to the market is the BAW Sasuka powered by a diesel engine.

The 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine offers 92kW and 320 Nm of torque, making it a fairly unique 16-seater option on the local market. The superior tractive power of the diesel will be a boon to drivers tackling regular hills and with a claimed fuel consumption of just 11.9 l/100.

What is more, for those operating in rural areas diesel is often far easy to source and much safer to transport than petrol.

BAW realise that building a brand in one of the toughest industries in the country requires more than just a cynical drive to sell taxis for less than the opposition does.

BAW’s new Sasuka diesel will enjoy the same comprehensive service plan as its original petrol version– 2 years or 100 000 km.

This can be extended by an optional 2 year 200 000km service plan.

The warranty can be optionally extended to 500 000 km on mechanicals, while on rentals there is the furthur option of a 5 Year 500 000 km service plan, AA Road Side Assistance including a full tow plan to nearest dealer and Active VOR (Vehicle Off Road) Programme managed from HQ.

This means the Sasuka gets a filter and lubricant service at 15 000 km intervals, new brake pads with each service, new brake linings and engine coolant replacement at specific intervals and access to 24- hour AA recovery service.

BAW have not forgotten the real customers – the working folk and elderly who have to pile into these vehicles every day.

To this end the Sasuka gets seating that is sculpted and includes a headrest. There is front and rear airconditioning as well as heating and a central DVD screen.

In addition to the diesel Sasuka there are plans in place to develop an entry level diesel Sasuka, panel van, tour bus and commuter vehicles to meet South African and neighbouring countries’ demand, and to increase their market share.

This will also increase the comprehensive competitiveness of the BAW South Africa product range. To ensure quality control a 2 year/100 000 km warranty will be provided by BAW South Africa with the vehicle.

With two full-service derivatives now on the market, BAW is further committing to the local taxi economy with the development of its manufacturing plant in Springs.

The soil-turning ceremony for the new factory was held earlier this year, and development is on schedule and due to be completed in the second half of 2018.

Great News for the Taxi Industry

BAW SA Introduces New Taxi Engine Range
A potent 2.8 liter turbo diesel engine launched for BAW SA’s minibus fleet
By Lu Anqi ·2017-11-08

Beijing Automobile Works South Africa (BAW SA) has recently expanded its 16-seater minibus Sasuka fleet by launching a 2.8 liter turbo diesel derivative to its existing petrol variant on November 6.

The new 2.8 liter diesel engine offers 92 kw and 320 Nm of torque, making it one of the more powerful options on the local market. In addition, the new model’s average fuel consumption is relatively low at about 11.9 liters per 100 km.

"The new engine has been put through a full regimen of testing in local conditions to ensure it offers the best possible performance and meets the needs of the local taxi industry," said BAW SA CEO Zhang Wei.

Zhang said the new diesel engine Sasuka minibus is fit for running in the hilly areas in South Africa and surrounding countries such as Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique and others.

"There is an increasing demand for cost-effective diesel options in the local taxi industry," Deputy Manager of BAW SA Yao Liqiang said when explaining the launch of the new product. "The constant rise in fuel price places a lot of pressure on taxi drivers, and for many, it makes more sense to opt for diesel, but only if it offers reduced running costs. And this is precisely what the new Sasuka diesel offers."

Since its initial launch in 2013, BAW’s 16-seater minibus, the Sasuka, has gradually gained popularity in the South African taxi market. BAW has now introduced a 2.8 liter turbo diesel derivative to supplement its existing Sasuka petrol variant, as part of the company’s long-term growth plan.

Zhang said that BAW’s new Sasuka diesel will also enjoy the same comprehensive service plan as its original petrol version: a two-year/100,000-km warranty and five-years/500,000-km in the rental plan.

At the launch ceremony held in Boksburg, South Africa, on November 6, Zhang thanked Sasuka buyers and those who had offered their support to BAW SA. He said that the plant is committed to contributing to serve the local public transport, creating more job opportunities through localization, and producing more and better products that cater to the needs of South Africa and Africa as a whole.

BAW invests R250m to upgrade Springs taxi plant

Beijing Automotive Works (BAW) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) will invest R250-million to expand and upgrade its minibus taxi plant, in Springs, Gauteng.
The facility currently assembles the Sasuka 16-seater taxi from semi knocked-down kits, for the South and Southern African market.

The expansion of the facility, announced in Springs on Monday, will see BAW South Africa (SA) assemble the Sasuka from completely knock-down kits (CKD), as from March next year.
Apart from a general upgrade of the plant and facilities, the investment will enable the construction of a new body assembly plant, paint plant, trim plant, a larger component warehouse to support full production and a new parts and accessories warehouse.

Capacity at the plant, on a single shift, will be 500 units a month.
The expansion is expected to add an additional 100 permanent jobs, in positions ranging from production to quality assurance, logistics, after-sales, marketing and management.
The plant is a joint venture between BAW (51%), the IDC (24.5%) and James Chung’s Golden Gate Trust (24.5%).
Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, BAW SA consultant Tony Godycki, from AG Consulting, said the more complex CKD assembly process would increase local content on the minibus taxi to at least 35%, which would see the Sasuka qualify for duty benefits in terms of exports to countries in Southern Africa.
Local CKD assembly would also lead to duty-free importation of Sasuka kits into South Africa.
Godycki said BAW SA already sourced components such as brake pads, springs and filters locally, and would look to add parts such as glass, tyres, radiators and seats to the list.
IDC CEO Geoffrey Qhena said the IDC supported the opportunity to introduce more competition to the local taxi industry.
The industry is currently dominated by the Toyota Quantum, assembled in Durban.
The BAW assembly facility was established in 2012, with an initial investment of R196-million.
New Products Planned
The Sasuka is available with a 2.7 l petrol engine.
BAW planned to introduce a 2.8 l diesel engine variant next month, noted BAW SA CEO Zhang Wei.
He added that the Sasuka was sold with a 500 000 km service plan as standard, as well as insurance that covered the vehicle and passengers.
Wei said there were BAW taxis operating in South Africa which had notched up more than 500 000 km on the clock.
BAW has become directly involved in customer finance through the formation of its own finance company.
Wei said BAW was investigating the possibility of introducing a panel van, as well as electric minibus to the local market.
China in SA
The Chinese Embassy’s Lian Zhaoshan, from the Economic and Commercial Counsellor’s office, said bilateral trade between South Africa and China reached $9.145-billion in the first three months of 2017, which was a 28.3% increase on the previous year.
