Butterfly Gardening

A demonstration by Americo N. Bonkewitzz, Ph.D.

Do you have in mind to create your own butterfly garden?

Come and bring your gardeners as well. Americo will give a short course about how to plant for butterflies.

Venue: Butterfly Habitat Garden, at the Durban Botanic Gardens. John Zikhale Rd entrance (ample guarded parking available).

Date & time: 24th April 2016, 9:00am
Entrance fees: R50 per person. If you bring your gardener, then it is R80 (R20 discount).

The short course consists of :

9:00am to 10:30am
A talk at the Butterfly Habitat Garden, Durban Botanic Gardens by Dr Americo Bonkewitzz.

Simultaneously, Kay Shabalala (a butterfly breeder) will give a brief identification course in isiZulu on butterfly plants to your gardeners at the dome of the Butterfly Habitat Garden.

10:30 -11:00am Break

11:00am to 12:00am

Then, everyone will visit the butterfly habitat garden to identify the plants mentioned during the talk and how the butterfly habitat garden was created.
This is the most precious time in which you will share knowledge of butterfly gardening with your gardener. The idea behind this is that once you return home you do not need to explain to your gardener the plants, he will already know and that makes the task much easier and fun building a butterfly garden together.

12:00am to 13:00am
After the visit to the dome there will be a sale of butterfly plants from different indigenous plant nurseries. All plants will be labeled indicating with a picture which butterfly species feed on it. There will also be a sale of butterfly plant sets in which the essential plants required to start off your own butterfly garden will be included at a reasonable price.
