MORE CONFUSION AMIDST SA EXPRESS CANCELLATIONS

SA Express says it is working with key stakeholders to ensure a speedy resolution of the challenges that have affected its operations.

A spokesperson for the airline says information regarding the cancellation of flights on Wednesday morning and the re-commencement of those flights later in the afternoon “had been released based on the understanding that the operational challenges that the airline had faced earlier in the day had been resolved”.

“A meeting was held on August 28 between Acsa and SA Express, facilitated by the Department of Transport and the Department of Public Enterprises in which a resolution was taken that the withdrawal of services by Acsa be lifted pursuant to SA Express meeting prescribed conditions,” the spokesperson said.

“These conditions were subsequently met, hence the SA Express communication that flights would be resumed on August 28 at 16h00,” the spokesperson added.

The statement says Acsa reneged on the agreements reached and Acsa has referred the matter to its board on the morning of August 29 to recommend a way forward.

SA Express has reportedly cancelled its Johannesburg-Lubumbashi flight today.

The CAA has confirmed to Travel & Meetings Buyer that the airline has not been grounded. The airline cited ‘operational reasons’ as the cause for flight cancellations.

The airline says that further updates will be provided as new information emerges.

NEW VISA PROCESS IN TANZANIA

Kilimanjaro Airport has changed the process of issuing visas on arrival. Going forward, clients arriving into Kilimanjaro, without a visa, will be required to complete a process estimated to take up to two hours for guests to go through, and it is only applicable to those arriving in Kilimanjaro without a visa.

It is recommended that for those guests who still have time before they travel, to go ahead and apply for the Tanzania visa online at www.immigration.go.tz
The online process requires more information from the guests than obtaining a visa on arrival, it is a much more convenient option. Once the process is completed online, the visa will be issued within 2-3 weeks.

Only the following 5 ports are currently functional:
• Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR)
• Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
• Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ)
• Namanga (road border between Arusha & Nairobi)
• Tunduma (road border between Tanzania & Zambia)

HONG KONG AIRPORT RESCHEDULES FLIGHTS

Hong Kong International Airport will implement flight rescheduling on August 14, following two consecutive days of protests that resulted in the cancellation of all flights at the airport.

Passengers are reminded to pay attention to the latest flight information through the airport’s website and confirm their flights before heading to the airport, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the airport authority has obtained an interim injunction to restrain protesters from gathering in the airport, except in designated areas.

SAA has said in a statement that it will resume flights between Johannesburg and Hong Kong from August 14.

The airline will provide all necessary assistance to all its booked passengers, including those who may need to travel to points beyond Johannesburg and Hong Kong, the statement reads.

Mozambique doubles tourist visa fee

The Mozambican government has doubled the cost of entry visas with immediate effect under a decree jointly signed by Economy and Finance Minister, Adriano Maleiane, and Interior Minister, Basilio Monteiro.

All single-entry visas applied for in foreign travellers’ countries of origin will be affected by the fee increases.

At the current exchange rate, the cost of single-entry visas valid for 30 days jumps from US$50 (R709) to US$102 (R1 447), while a visa valid for between 31 and 60 days will now cost US$203 (R2 881).

Visas valid for between 61 and 90 days now cost US$305 (R4 327).

Border visas – which can be obtained on entry to Mozambique by land, sea or air – remain unaffected, says Natalie Tenzer-Silva of Dana Tours in Mozambique. Border visas allow dual entry within a 30-day period.

SAA signs codeshare with Gol-Linhas Aéreas

South African Airways has signed codeshare and frequent flyer agreements with Brazilian airline Gol-Linhas Aéreas (GOL).

The agreement will enable SAA to add its code to 20 connecting flights in Brazil operated by GOL in the Brazilian territory, which will allow SAA customers to integrate their travel with easy connections on flights of both carriers.

Besides the codeshare, the signed Frequent Flyer Programme (FFP) agreement offers members of each airline’s programmes, Voyager from SAA and Smiles from GOL, the opportunity to accrue and redeem miles.

Customers from Smiles can accrue and redeem miles on flights operated by SAA to Africa, Asia and Australia, and Voyager members can accrue and redeem Voyager miles on flights operated by GOL.
