Cedarberg Africa

Cedarberg Africa Cedarberg Africa designs imaginative tours, exclusive safaris and self-drive holidays to Africa. If you share any of these frustrations, we can help you!

Cedarberg Africa was set up by two sisters, Kate Bergh and Ginny Russell, in 1995. We've spent the last 20 working solely with people who want a high value, highly tailor-made safari or holiday in Africa or the Indian Ocean islands. Cedarberg Africa is a family-run business operating from the UK and South Africa. For 17 years we've been helping families, groups and individuals who want a high valu

e, tailormade safari in Africa. We typically help busy, demanding people who are:
Concerned to avoid making the wrong decisions about a "once in a lifetime" trip;
Bewildered by choice or don't know where to start to turn a long-held dream into reality;
Too busy to trawl the chatrooms but don't want to settle for ‘second best’ either. Our consultants have plenty of first hand experience of Africa; most because they were born there and some because they've fallen in love with it as travellers. We've spent time driving the roads, sleeping in the beds and making time to watch the sunrise over the waterhole. We'd like to share it with you. Our clients range from parents anxious to make sure that all the families needs are met on a first-time safari, via time-pressured honeymooners to safari veterans keen to try somewhere "different".

There’s something incredibly rewarding about exploring South Africa at your own pace.

A self-drive holiday offers true freedom. No fixed schedules, no group travel, just you and the open road. It’s also often better value, especially for couples and families.

With the right planning, it’s surprisingly easy. Roads are generally good and signage is clear, making South Africa one of the best destinations for a self-drive safari.

We’ve planned thousands of self-drive trips, so we know what works and how to keep things enjoyable, not rushed.

The result is the freedom of the open road, with the reassurance that everything has been carefully thought through.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐮𝐧 — 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Each year, along South Africa’s Wild Coast, billions of sardines move in vast shoals, triggering one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on Earth.

Often compared to the Great Migration, this is its ocean counterpart.

• Dolphins work together to herd the fish into bait balls.
• Sharks rise from the depths.
• Whales breach.
• Seabirds dive from above.

It’s fast. Unpredictable. Completely wild.
And you’re right there in it.

In 2026, experience this remarkable event with a stay at , where each day of ocean exploration is balanced with space, comfort, and a sense of complete escape.

Head out with expert guides to track the action, then return to a remote coastal lodge overlooking the ocean.

It’s a rare combination of raw nature and refined experience.
No two days are ever the same, and that’s exactly the point!

As always, we can tailor this into a fully customised journey, combining the Sardine Run with safari, Cape Town, or beyond.

If this is your kind of travel, we’d love to share more!

𝐎𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐫:

Nita recently stayed at Rhino Sands Safari Lodge in the Manyoni Private Game Reserve and came away genuinely impressed.

This is an intimate, romantic lodge with a true “Out of Africa” feel — from the English colonial styling to the elevated wooden walkways connecting the lodge.

What stood out:
• 𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 & 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: Spacious tented suites with outdoor showers, private plunge pools, and views over the river
• 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝: Exceptional — beautifully presented and full of flavour (the breakfast tray alone is a feast)
• 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Attentive, personal service with a dedicated butler, and excellent guiding in open vehicles

What truly sets Rhino Sands apart is its commitment to 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Located within Manyoni — one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most important conservation success stories — the lodge actively supports ongoing efforts to protect endangered species, particularly rhino. Through partnerships with reserve management and anti-poaching initiatives, guests are not just observing wildlife, but contributing to its future.

It’s a safari that feels more meaningful — where luxury and purpose quietly go hand in hand.

A wonderful option for travellers seeking a more romantic, conservation-led safari in KwaZulu-Natal.

One we’d confidently recommend for the right traveller!!
If this feels like your kind of safari, we’re always happy to share more.

Baby season in the Bush!!

Late spring and summer (Oct–Jan) is baby season in the bush.

Many of our beautiful antelope give birth after the first rains, while elephants and big cats have calves and cubs throughout the year — with summer offering some of the best chances to spot them.

Why this timing?
• First summer rains = fresh grass
• Mothers have better nutrition
• More food = better milk supply
• Babies are born when conditions are best for survival

These little ones might be small, but they remind us that the bush is full of hope, wonder, and new beginnings.

Which baby animal is your favourite??

Slow down. Look closer. Be present.

As the year gently winds down, we took a short pause on social media to do the same 🤍

Between wrapping up the year with our team, spending time together, and a bit of well-deserved travel for some, we allowed ourselves a moment to breathe and reflect.

This year also marked a very special milestone for us — 30 years of Cedarberg Africa!

Three decades of journeys, relationships, and unforgettable experiences, made possible by the incredible people who travel with us and support us along the way.

To all who celebrate Christmas, we hope it was filled with warmth and connection. And to those who don’t, we wish you a peaceful, restful festive season as we move into the final days of the year.

Thank you for being part of our journey in 2025 — we’re looking forward to what lies ahead
