As the warehousing industry in South Africa evolves, so do the safety protocols and operational efficiency. CEO Cornell Van Rooyen of Rhenus Logistics, Africa and Middle East, shares insights on the delicate balance of automation and employment considerations.

Over the past decade, we've witnessed incredible growth in world-class warehousing operations, with advancements in design, smart tech integration, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Safety standards have been elevated, aligning South Africa with global counterparts, ensuring rigorous housekeeping routines and long-term sustainability.

The rise in online shopping has also led to quicker deliveries and an increase in smaller vehicle fleets for express courier services. This has prompted the establishment of satellite branches and hub infrastructure to meet customer demands.

South Africa's warehousing industry is on a promising path, embracing the changing landscape and growing customer expectations.

Freight forwarders face three main challenges in 2023:
- A possible recession - Geopolitical risks -Rising operating costs.

Despite this, they are optimistic about increased air and sea freight volumes in the next year. Around 40% saw air volumes rise by 1-25% in 2022, and a similar percentage expects the same in the future.

Sea freight also looks promising, with over a third anticipating up to 25% volume increases. However, margins are under pressure due to competition and client negotiations. Using technology and value-added services can help. Access to technology is a big challenge, as it's expensive and there's a shortage of skilled personnel.

South African enterprises have exciting opportunities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)….

Cobalt production is set to soar by 38.5% to 223,000 tonnes by 2025, and the DRC supplies 70% of the world's cobalt.

South Africa can tap into this market, especially in mining. It's the DRC's top foreign goods and services supplier, contributing over 20% to imports.
Deputy Minister Nomalungelo Gina says, "The DRC is a substantial marketplace for South African enterprises."

Main exports include steel structures, machinery parts, and mining equipment.

There's huge potential for South African exporters to grow in the DRC's mining industry, estimated at around R569 million.
