Thank you, Mia, for sharing your family's day with us on the Heritage Day Picnic Train to Darling Cellars!

"Any transport company can get you from A to B. Cape Rail managed to get a toddler to sleep voluntarily. That's not a train service. That's a miracle."

We will happily take the credit, but it belongs to the whole team. Our crew worked hard to make the journey comfortable and relaxed for every guest, from our youngest conductors-in-training to the train enthusiasts, and kept things running smoothly from Cape Town to Mamreweg. Thank you as well to Darling Cellars for the w**e tasting on board, which several guests have told us was a highlight of the trip for them.

To everyone who worked on the day, thank you!

🚂 Ask Cape Rail · No 06 · Dropped Phones! 🥃🚂

The scenery we run through is amazingly beautiful, so much so, that it is irresistible to take a photo when such a scene presents itself.

Unfortunately, in the rush to get an epic shot, passengers sometimes drop a phone out of the window. The inevitable panic sets in and the Train Manager gets asked to stop the train - but unfortunately, this is usually not something we are able to do given the operational context. Our crew drop a pin location, and if we pass that spot again, we stop on the way back to collect it.

So keep a tight hold on your phone when trying to get that stunning shot!

Have you ever dropped your phone out of a train?

Depot Diaries #9: Lending a Helping Hand

Sometimes we get the opportunity to work with other private operators in keeping services running - this week gave us the opportunity to change out a wheelset for Rovos Rail.

Of particular interest in this video is a demonstration of why "wheel tapping" is a great tool in determining the health of a coach wheel.

Its always great to see the team come together and make a plan!

Meet the team #13: Mzoxolo - Security Guard and Maintenance, since 2025

Mzoxolo joined us in late 2025 as a security guard, having previously also been employed as a security guard at Van Der Stel Station. He was introduced to us by Lunga (whom you have already met), and has been a loyal member of the team ever since.

In the time he has been with us, he has spent a lot of time in Mossel Bay guarding our assets there, but also showing interest in the maintenance activities that our team are busy with.

We believe in having our team grow in areas that they are interested in, so we have started to give him more opportunities on the maintenance side of our operations - something that he has really shown promise in.

Seeing our people grow and thrive is amazing to see.

Thank you, Mzoxolo. We are glad you are with us.

A 70th birthday, a raised glass, and a train adventure to Elgin 🚆

Elizora and her family travelled with us to celebrate her mom's 70th, and were kind enough to leave us this review. Thank you, Elizora. Happy birthday to your mom from all of us at Cape Rail Company.

Our train to Elgin Railway Market runs most weekends from Cape Town to the Elgin Railway Market, with time at the market to eat, browse and relax before the journey home. Birthdays, anniversaries, or simply a good day out with people you love - the journey there is part of the celebration.

Thank you, Carl, for these kind words after our Heritage Day Picnic Train to Darling Cellars!

"An absolutely phenomenal experience from start to finish! The train ride from VNA (close enough) to Darling was truly unforgettable, with breathtaking scenery, a wonderful atmosphere, and exceptional service throughout."

A day like this is carried by the people behind it. Our crew were on board from the early start and looked after every guest all the way to Darling Cellars and home again, and the team at Darling Cellars gave everyone a warm welcome, good w**e and a proper Heritage Day braai on the lawns. To everyone who worked on the day: thank you.

And thank you to every guest who travelled with us to celebrate Heritage Day. We would love to see you again!

🎶"Dis altyd lente..."🎶

Heritage day is always something a little different, and for our 2026 trip, we went to Darling Cellars for a different type of event - Our guests were treated to w**e tasting on the train, and a picnic, braai, and live music performance by Nic Stevens at the venue.

The weather played its part in making this a day full of excitement and fun.

The crew play a massive role, as always, in making this a truly memorable day - do you think we should do this one again?
