Zanzibar island holiday: beaches, Stone Town and spice-scented adventures 🌴 🫚

The African dung beetle: the tiny navigator that reads the stars 🌌🪲

Happy World Space Week! Meet one of Africa's smallest space experts.

After finding dung, a beetle rolls it into a ball and races off in a perfectly straight line, so rivals can't steal its prize. Scientists wondered how it managed that on dark, moonless nights.

So they tested it. In 2013, researchers from Wits University and Lund University put beetles under the night sky of the Wits Planetarium in Johannesburg.

When the Milky Way was shown, the beetles rolled straight. When it was hidden, they wandered in circles. To be sure, they even fitted the beetles with tiny "caps" to block their view of the sky.

The result: the dung beetle is the first animal known to use the Milky Way to find its way. 🗺

Next time you're under a star-filled African sky on safari, look down as well as up. There might be a beetle navigating by the same stars you're admiring.

Spring just arrived in the African bush. 🌍🌸

While half the world is pulling jackets out for autumn, we're watching new grass push through soil, migratory birds touching down, and we get ever closer to viewing the first wobbly-legged calves start finding their feet.

This is the start of an iconic African safari season - golden morning light, thinning bush for easier wildlife viewing, flowers start to bloom and you find that unmistakable feeling of everything waking up.
