Excavation and construction on the Victoria and Alfred Basins in Cape Town’s fledgling harbour began in 1860, largely to cope with the increase in shipping resulting from the discovery of gold and diamonds upcountry.

By 1920 these basins were completed, and forests of wooden masts stood above the crammed vessels as they unloaded passengers and supplies and took on valuables to return to home base.

But these ships were a great deal smaller than later 20th century vessels; the tankers, container vessels and floating hotels that docked here, and the V&A basins were relegated to fishing and recreational vessels.

In 1988 some visionary people saw the potential in this historical area on the docks, and so was born the idea and beginnings of the V&A Waterfront.

The following four decades have been a phenomenal journey of growth and development, and in 2026 the bustling Waterfront stretches over 123 HA, sees annual visitors in excess of 24 million with a total revenue of over R335 billion.

It’s a remarkable combination of preserved history and modern day architecture and entrepreneurial spirit, and we at Waterfront Charters have been here for virtually the entire duration.
