STONE-THROWING ATTACKS ON SIBANYE BUSES ARE CRIMINAL THREAT TO COMMUTER SAFETY
The Western Cape Department of Mobility, City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate and Sibanye Bus Services condemn the attacks on buses operating in and around Dunoon and call on the public to report any knowledge of the identity of these criminals.
Since 22 May, 36 stoning incidents have been reported in Dunoon, causing damage to 47 bus windows and three windscreens. While the damage to vehicles is significant, the greater concern is the human impact: at least seven passengers have been injured in these incidents.
“Public transport is a lifeline for thousands of residents, and attacks on buses put commuters’ safety and the livelihoods of working families at risk. We want to build a public transport system that is safe, affordable and reliable, and that residents can trust. Incidents like these will not stop our work. We will continue working with SAPS, law enforcement and transport operators to identify those responsible and keep commuters safe,” said Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku.
“These attacks are criminal and we will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book. Endangering the lives of innocent commuters, bus drivers, and other road users is beneath contempt. Residents travelling to work, to school, to clinics and back home again have every right to do so without fear, and these attacks undermine their right to freedom of movement. The City stands with Sibanye in condemning these attacks without reservation,” said the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
“It is utterly unacceptable to threaten, intimidate or injure innocent people simply because they choose to travel by bus. No one should be subjected to violence or fear for exercising their right to choose how they travel. Each incident has been reported to SAPS and we appreciate the support of law enforcement and other role players. These cowardly criminals must be caught and brought to book,” said Sibanye Director Derick Meyer.
“Our primary concern remains the wellbeing of the travelling public and maintaining reliable access to public transport services. Addressing criminal conduct within the public transport environment requires co-ordinated action among law enforcement authorities, transport stakeholders, and affected communities,” said Meyer.

Violence and intimidation have no place in public transport and cannot be allowed to disrupt the movement of residents or interfere with lawful transport operations.
