Western Cape amplifies fight against Covid-19 stigmatisation

The fight against the stigmatisation of those infected with Covid-19 is just as important as the fight against the virus, as this may lead to people not seeking help if they suspect they have contracted the coronavirus.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has noted with concern certain acts of stigmatisation towards its own officials, with media houses and social media platforms reporting incidents where correctional officials were denied access to certain places including supermarkets and shops.

DCS has since employed a number of tactics in the fight against Covid-19 stigmatization.

However, stigmatization associated with the coronavirus is not unique to DCS but is a global challenge. Therefore, the fight against the virus is a community fight. It’s about keeping the community safe, and protecting all the members of the community from getting an infection.

The coronavirus is also about fighting the stigma. As DCS, let us not discriminate against anyone who is infected.

Facts, not fear, will stop the spread of Covid-19. (copy submitted)

New rates and tariffs from 1 July 2020

New rates and tariffs kicked in on 1 July 2020, so your July accounts will show rates increases of approximately 4%.
We would have preferred not to increase rates and tariffs this year because of the economic impact of COVID-19, but we depend on rates and services to fund, among others, the delivery of water, as well as sanitation and electricity services.
We have made sure to cut our costs and change programmes which ensured we only implemented the following increases:
• Rates - 4%
• Electricity - 4,8%
• Water and sanitation - 4,5%
• Refuse removal - 3,5%
All the income received from rates and tariffs is used to provide basic services.
Our budget for this financial year includes a rates and service relief package of
R3,3 billion and R9,6 billion to help boost Cape Town’s economy.
Visit www.capetown.gov.za/budget for more information and find out how the budget works.
Among others, your rates and tariffs have over the past year:
• maintained 11 500 kms of water network, 9 500 kms of sewer infrastructure,
5 600 kms of stormwater pipeline, 490 waste water pump stations, 23 waste water treatment works and 180 reservoirs;
• tested more than 18 800 drinking water samples to ensure quality;
• serviced about 622 000 water meters;
• maintained more than 666 500 electricity meters, serviced around 86 high-voltage substations and 14 443 kms of lines and cables;
• responded to more than 73% of our fire services emergencies within 14 minutes.

Remember: If you have been financially impacted by COVID-19, relief options are available. You can also make interest-free payment arrangements.

De Lille signs off shelters for GBV victims
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Patricia de Lille, says government has signed off 12 properties in Gauteng and the Western Cape to be used as shelters for victims of gender-based violence. The Minister said this when she participated in a debate on gender-based violence in the National Assembly’s hybrid sitting on Tuesday afternoon. Incidents of gender-based violence and femicide sent shockwaves through the nation during lockdown. These include the murder of the pregnant 28-year-old Tshegofatso P**e, whose lifeless body was found hanging on a tree in Durban Deep in Roodepoort last month. Musicalize Malephane, 31, the man accused of her murder, has been arrested and has already appeared in court. De Lille said parents and guardians must lay the foundation for children to know, before they go to school, that discrimination – whether it is based on race, gender, culture or any other factor, is unacceptable. – SAnews.gov.za
