Often when sitting around the fire out in the bush the conversation turns to opinions on where the most beautiful destinations people have travelled to are. Whenever this topic arises Namibia is always a contender for anyone who has been lucky enough to travel there.

There’s a rawness to Namibia that’s difficult to put into words — vast desert landscapes stretching endlessly in every direction, empty gravel roads disappearing into the horizon, and a silence so complete it almost feels surreal. It’s a country that makes you feel wonderfully small, where the scale of the land, the isolation and the harsh beauty truly touch your soul and leave you staring for hours at nothing (and everything).

Hidden deep within Namibia’s remote Kaokoland, ’s Hoanib Valley Camp is where desert wilderness and understated luxury meet. In a country filled with vast and spectacular landscapes, Kaokoland may just be the most extraordinary of them all — a wild expanse of towering mountains, rolling dunes, ancient riverbeds and remote Himba settlements scattered across north-western Namibia. It’s one of the country’s last truly untamed places, and the very reason Hoanib Valley Camp was built here.

The second stop on our South African fam trip with , our Texan trip mates, brought us to — a safari stay where design, privacy and sustainability are just as much a part of the experience as the wildlife itself.

Hidden among the trees of the Sabi Sands, each private villa feels more like your own luxury bush house than a traditional lodge. Big open spaces, clean modern design and floor-to-ceiling glass everywhere make it feel constantly connected to the landscape outside, while still being incredibly comfortable and private. Each villa houses a carefully curated modern art collection (along with the on-site gallery) and comes with its own dedicated team of staff, including the services of a professional hairdresser should one require a quick styling or bush blowout.

What we really loved though was how naturally the sustainability side is built into the experience. The property runs on solar and the electric game viewers completely change the feel of a drive — quieter, smoother and far less intrusive. You notice so much more when there’s no engine noise competing with the sounds of the bush.

The service was also a real standout. Warm, relaxed and incredibly attentive without ever feeling formal or over the top. Combined with fantastic food and beautifully designed spaces, it’s the kind of place that’s very easy to settle into very quickly, exactly how a private villa in the bush should feel.

, the second stop on our South African fam with , our Texan trip mates, and what an introduction to the legendary Sabi Sands it turned out to be.

Set within one of Africa’s most storied safari regions, these private villas manage to blend ultra-modern design with a deeply eco-conscious approach to safari. From solar-powered operations to their silent electric game viewers, sustainability is woven into every part of the experience without ever compromising on luxury.

From the moment we arrived, the storied Sabi Sands delivered. Our very first sunset drive brought a leopard encounter almost immediately, followed not long after by another dramatic sighting where a lion got wind of a leopard’s fresh kill and decided it would make an easy dinner for himself. The ensuing chase through the nighttime bush was a unique thrill and delivered more than one heart-pounding moment.

The wildlife action here was fantastic— and experiencing it all from the quiet comfort of the electric vehicles made the sightings feel even more immersive, allowing every sound of the bush to take centre stage. Every drive offered something new and different, right up to the final jaunt before the departure flights from the nearby airstrip.

Beyond the game drives, it was the warmth of the team, the outstanding service, and some seriously fantastic food that made the stay so memorable.

Our final evening ended in the most fitting way possible: gathered around a traditional South African braai in the boma beneath the stars, swapping stories from our recent bush encounters.

Perched high above the N’wanetsi River in the remote eastern reaches of the Kruger, Lebombo Lodge feels less like a traditional safari lodge and more like a design-led sanctuary suspended in the wilderness. Inspired by eagle nests built into the cliffside, its glass-and-steel suites open entirely to the landscape, blurring the line between indoors and the bush beyond.

We kicked off our recent South African fam here alongside our Texan trip mates from , and it was quite the introduction. An atmospheric evening game drive through the lush Lebombo concession set the tone and our time the greater Kruger area had begun.

The following morning, our incredible guide Bernard led us on a deeply immersive bush walk that reminded us just how layered and intricate the Kruger ecosystem really is. Slowing down and experiencing the wilderness on foot always brings a completely different perspective to safari and is a highly recommended experience, especially for those who have been on safari before.

Later that afternoon, we spent time at the unique Singita Community Culinary School, learning to prepare local dishes. More than just a culinary experience, the programme plays an important role in skills development and creating meaningful opportunities for young people in the region.

The rest of our stay unfolded in that signature rhythm — exceptional cuisine, memorable wildlife sightings including leopard and wild dogs, thoughtful conversations with the wonderful Lebombo team, and an overriding atmosphere of quiet, understated luxury. A truly special place to begin our trip.

It’s impossible to quantify the impact of Sir David Attenborough’s work and just how much he has done for conservation, our understanding of nature, the way people see the world around them — and what must be done to protect it.

One of the most remarkable people of our time, and the voice of generations, turns 100 today. We are eternally grateful for everything you’ve given us through your storytelling, curiosity, and unwavering dedication to the natural world.
