"Japan's three major container lines agree to merge

Japan's three leading container lines announced yesterday that they were merging their worldwide container operations. In a statement the three lines said that Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha ('K' Line), Ltd, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd (MOL), and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have agreed, after a resolution by the board of directors of each company, and subject to regulatory approval from the authorities, to establish a new joint-venture company to integrate the container shipping businesses (including worldwide terminal operating businesses excluding Japan) of all three companies and to sign a business integration contract and a shareholders agreement. The announcement confirms rumours to this effect and the only surprise is the length of time being taken to put the new merger into operation. "

MV Benita sinks off Mauritius

Five Oceans Salvage reported on Saturday evening (SA time) that the bulk carrier MV BENITA, which was under tow en route from Mauritius to India, has sunk approximately 93.5 nautical miles from Mauritius at 17h30 LT that day [Saturday 30 July 2016] at a charted depth of 4,400 metres.
The vessel turned over by the stern at approximately 13h35 local time after having earlier taken a severe stern trim, necessitating tug IONIAN SEA FOS to activate the tow line quick release system in anticipation of Benita's imminent sinking.

MSC has just named its fourth Oscar class supersize containership on her maiden call at Antwerp.

MSC Maya is a 19 224 TEU capacity ship and joins her sister ships – the largest in the world (for the moment) - the MSC Oscar, Zoe and Oliver.
