🧭 Our Story (Founder’s Voice)

I’m Corné — an overlander at heart. I choose gravel over airports, sunsets over city lights, and the quiet of the African bush over anything else. Every mile reminds me why I explore: to feel alive, to connect deeper with nature, and to capture stories worth remembering. Tusk & Tyre is my way of sharing that journey with you.

The Himba people of Kaokoland are often romanticized as a culture frozen in time, hidden away in the harsh deserts of northwestern Namibia. But they aren't hidden ,and they were never lost.

In this episode, we park Motsumi and journey into a traditional Himba homestead near the Kunene River. Beyond the striking red ochre and the intricate, symbolic hairstyles lies a history of immense resilience. From surviving devastating cattle plagues that earned them the name "Ovahimba" (beggars), to enduring colonial wars through sheer geography, this is a look at a culture that nearly ended twice in the same century, and didn't.

Sometimes, the best thing a place can do is make you quieter than when you arrived.

Thirty million square kilometres of Africa behind me. Two oceans in front, still arguing about whose turn it is. Cape Agulhas is the place the Portuguese named after their compass needles because here, magnetic north and true north line up exactly. Your compass doesn’t lie at Agulhas—but the coastline does. With over 150 wrecks along this stretch, the lighthouse has its work cut out for it.

Three weeks ago this page had under a thousand of you on it. Today it's over five thousand. That happened across Pringle Bay, the two Betty's Bay episodes — the whaling station and the penguins at Stony Point — and the full Hermanus series. Different doors, same road. Quick intro is probably overdue for the new faces.
The truck is Motsumi — a 2005 F250 with a Cummins 5.9 turbo diesel, a Blinkgat camper on the back, four lithium batteries, three solar panels, and a Nespresso machine that takes itself seriously. We're documenting overlanding across southern and eastern Africa. Real roads, real breakdowns, real places.
Cape Agulhas drops Friday. After that Motsumi heads north for Tanzania and Malawi.
Glad you're here.
