A TWO-DAY TRAVEL DIARY – THE WEATHER WASN’T PERFECT, BUT THE JOURNEY STILL WAS
Some trips begin with opening the curtains in the morning, looking at the sky, and thinking, “Well… getting those perfect travel photos might be a little challenging today.”
That pretty much sums up these two days.
We had rain, cloudy skies, and at times some fairly strong winds. Central Vietnam was definitely not showing off its brightest blue-sky version. Fortunately, the weather only made the photos a little less colorful — it certainly didn’t dampen the spirit of the journey.
Day 1: My Son Sanctuary → Cam Kim & Kim B**g Village → Tra Que Vegetable Village → An Bang Beach → Hoi An Ancient Town
We started the morning at My Son Sanctuary, the UNESCO World Heritage Site located in a peaceful valley outside Hoi An.
The sky was overcast with occasional rain, but My Son has a different kind of beauty in this weather. The ancient Cham temples surrounded by mountains and low clouds felt quieter, more mysterious, and somehow even more atmospheric.
From My Son, we continued into the countryside of Hoi An, visiting Cam Kim and Kim B**g Village.
There are no busy shopping streets or flashy attractions here. Instead, you find small village roads, rice fields, local homes, workshops, and the slower rhythm of everyday life along the Thu Bon River.
Our next stop was Tra Que Vegetable Village.
And to be fair to the weather, rain does make the vegetables greener — so at least it made one positive contribution to the day.
We then continued to An Bang Beach.
A rainy day may not be the most picture-perfect version of An Bang Beach, but travelling isn’t always about blue skies, golden sunshine, and photos that need absolutely no filter.
Our final stop of the day was Hoi An Ancient Town.
As evening arrived, the lanterns began to glow and their lights reflected beautifully on the rain-covered streets.
It wasn’t the bright, sunny Hoi An that appears on postcards, but the old town had a wonderful atmosphere of its own.
Day 2: Son Tra Sunrise → Linh Ung Pagoda → Hai Van Pass → Lang Co → Marble Mountains
The original plan was to start the second day by watching the sunrise from Son Tra Peninsula in Da Nang.
Unfortunately, the sunrise seemed to have taken the morning off.
There was no dramatic red sun rising above the sea, but we still began the day on Son Tra Peninsula, watching Da Nang slowly wake up beneath layers of clouds.
From there, we visited Linh Ung Pagoda and the famous Lady Buddha statue before continuing north toward Hai Van Pass.
Hai Van Pass on a sunny day is spectacular.
Hai Van Pass in the rain is also spectacular… although sometimes it requires just a little more imagination.
Clouds wrapped around the mountains, sections of the road appeared and disappeared through the mist, and the coastline occasionally revealed itself far below.
Even when visibility isn’t perfect, the scenic drive from Da Nang over Hai Van Pass to Lang Co remains one of the most memorable road trips in Central Vietnam.
After descending the pass, we stopped in Lang Co before returning toward Da Nang.
Our two-day journey finished at the Marble Mountains, one of Da Nang’s best-known landmarks with caves, pagodas, viewpoints, and centuries of history.
Two days.
Quite a few kilometres.
Plenty of stops.
And probably a few too many moments spent looking at the sky and hoping the rain would stop.
The weather during this trip honestly wasn’t as beautiful as we had hoped.
But the best part was that our guests were still smiling, still curious, still enjoying every destination, and still having a great time right until the end.
For us, a memorable tour doesn’t always require perfect blue skies.
Sometimes all you need is good company, an interesting itinerary, and the ability to keep enjoying the journey even when the weather decides not to cooperate.
