⚠️ Geopolitical Escalation Between the U.S., Israel and Iran:

How It Impacts the Strait of Hormuz and Global Shipping

The recent escalation involving United States, Israel, and Iran is raising serious concerns across the global logistics industry — particularly regarding vessel movements through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

This waterway is one of the most critical maritime chokepoints in the world, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and international waters.

Approximately 20–25% of the world’s crude oil supply and a significant share of global LNG exports transit through this corridor daily. Any disruption here has immediate global consequences.

🚢 Direct Impact on Maritime Transport

1️⃣ Increased Security Risk & Vessel Disruptions

Following military exchanges in the region, security alerts have intensified around the Strait of Hormuz. Several shipping operators and energy companies have reportedly:
• Suspended transits temporarily
• Delayed sailings
• Reassessed risk exposure and routing strategies

Even without a full closure, heightened war-risk premiums and navigational warnings are already affecting vessel scheduling and cost structures.

🌍 Which Trade Lanes Are Most Affected?

🔹 Energy Trade Routes (Most Critical)

Crude oil and LNG exports from Gulf countries such as:
• Saudi Arabia
• UAE
• Kuwait
• Qatar
• Iran

Primarily move toward:
• Asia (China, India, Japan, South Korea)
• Europe
• North America

Any restriction through Hormuz directly impacts these energy corridors, potentially tightening supply and driving up global oil prices.

🔹 Container & General Cargo Routes

While energy shipments are most sensitive, container vessels trading between:
• South Asia / Southeast Asia
• The Middle East
• Europe

may also face indirect disruption due to:
• Route adjustments
• Security deviations
• Congestion in alternative ports
• Insurance premium increases

💰 Broader Logistics Consequences

📈 1. Rising Freight Costs

War-risk insurance premiums have surged in high-risk zones. This translates into:
• Additional surcharges
• Increased bunker adjustment factors (BAF)
• Higher overall ocean freight rates

⛴️ 2. Potential Rerouting

If the situation escalates further, vessels may divert via the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), adding:
• 15–20 extra sailing days
• Higher fuel consumption
• Reduced fleet efficiency
• Equipment imbalances globally

This would mirror previous disruptions seen during Red Sea tensions.

📦 3. Supply Chain Instability

Longer transit times and higher freight costs may lead to:
• Delayed deliveries
• Increased inventory holding costs
• Volatile commodity pricing
• Pressure on global manufacturing and retail supply chains

🔎 Strategic Outlook

The Strait of Hormuz is not merely an energy passage — it is a global logistics artery.

Prolonged instability in this corridor could:

✔ Disrupt energy markets
✔ Increase maritime insurance costs
✔ Create global freight volatility
✔ Pressure supply chains across Asia, Europe, and the Americas

📢 What Should Logistics Players Do?

Forwarders, shippers, and supply chain managers should:
• Monitor geopolitical developments in real time
• Review contractual risk clauses
• Evaluate alternative routing strategies
• Adjust pricing models proactively
• Strengthen communication with carriers and partners

📌 Conclusion

The geopolitical tension between the United States, Israel, and Iran has introduced a new layer of uncertainty to global shipping operations, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. While the situation remains fluid, the logistics industry must prepare for potential cost escalation and transit disruption scenarios.

IOFREIGHT will continue to closely monitor developments and provide timely updates to our partners and clients via this page. Stay tuned for further insights and risk assessments.

🚨 Mexico Logistics & Security Update
📅 Status as of February 24, 2026

Following recent security disruptions in western Mexico, the situation is now entering a recovery phase. Below is the latest verified operational update affecting logistics flows:

1️⃣ Security & Road Transportation – Gradual Stabilization

After the reported k.i.l.l.i.n.g of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (El Mencho), authorities have intensified security operations across western Mexico.
• The Mexican Federal Army (SEDENA) and the National Guard have regained operational control of major highways, including the Manzanillo–Colima–Guadalajara corridor.
• Main roads are now accessible; however, multiple military checkpoints are causing significant transit delays.
• Sporadic security incidents are still being reported in mountainous areas of Jalisco, particularly near Tapalpa.
• Real-time GPS monitoring and route risk assessment remain strongly recommended.

2️⃣ Port & Air Logistics – Operational with Congestion

⚓ Port of Manzanillo
• Container pick-up and delivery services have resumed.
• Vessel anchoring and unloading operations are functioning normally.
• However, due to cargo backlog accumulated during the disruption period, terminal yard capacity is currently saturated.
• Container retrieval is taking approximately 2–3 times longer than usual.

✈️ Air freight operations:
• Guadalajara International Airport (GDL)
• Playa de Oro International Airport (ZLO)

Flight schedules have largely normalized. Nevertheless, inland security checks continue to impact trucking flows to and from airport cargo terminals.

3️⃣ Customs Operations – Administrative Delays

Customs authorities have resumed normal operations.
However, due to backlog accumulation during the disruption period:
• Clearance approvals
• Physical inspections
• Documentation processing

may experience delays of several additional days.

4️⃣ Outlook & Risk Assessment
• Authorities remain on high alert due to potential retaliatory activity following the leadership vacuum within the cartel structure.
• There remains a short-term risk of renewed localized unrest.
• Carriers may implement additional Security / Es**rt surcharges.
• Some transport providers may refuse night operations, leading to increased logistics costs and longer lead times.

🔎 Summary for Shippers & Consignees

✔ Infrastructure is operational
✔ Ports and airports are open
⚠ Congestion and inspection delays remain significant
⚠ Cost increases are likely in the short term

IOFREIGHT continues to monitor developments closely and will provide immediate updates as the situation evolves.
