HOA LU ANCIENT CAPITAL
Hoa Lu, the capital of Dai Co Viet (an old name of Vietnam) under the Dinh and Le dynasties bears with it a legend. Being the capital of the first fundamental Government of Vietnam, Hoa Lu witnessed many important historical events: the union of Vietnam after “12 Lords Rebellion”, the war with the Song dynasty, the defense against the ancient Cambodian, and the formation of Hanoi nowadays. With the total size of 13.87 square kilometers, Hoa Lu old capital is an attractive place that history lovers should not miss out.

First and foremost, attractions catching tourists ‘ eyes are temples, where people worship the Emperors and royal people that ruled here more than 1000 years ago: Dinh Tien Hoang Emperor temple, Le Dai Hanh Emperor temple, Phat Kim Princess temple (Phat Kim is a tragic fate daughter of DinhTien Hoang Emperor), and the newest one is Ly Thai To Emperor temple, which built in order to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Hanoi. Besides, Hoa Lu has the four sacred temples of Hoa Lu (Hoa Lu Tu Tran) to worship the Gods of four directions: Quy Minh temple, Thien Ton temple, Cao Son temple and Nguyen temple. Moreover, Hoa Lu also has its own One Pillar Pagoda like the One-Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi, but not to be confused with the one in Hanoi, Hoa Lu One-Pillar Pagoda has a Pillar full of phrase by Buddha in front of it, which stands there more than 1000 years. Along with these temples and pagodas, plenty of monuments, tombs, shrines worship many other famous people and Gods are attractive places as well.

Secondly, Hoa Lu still keeps the remaining of ancients fortress built by Dinh dynasty more than 1000 years ago. The Imperial place lays under the ground for 3m and now become a very interesting place to visit. Tourists will have the chance to see the old items used by the royal family in ancient time. The fortress outside is built based on the natural advantages: the mountain provides good background, the deep valley is a basement, and the rivers supply water for people inside the fortress and would become traps to fight against enemy in any case. This fortress is a very solid one that can defense against even the strongest enemy for months. On the other hand, inside the fortress is marvelous scenery for photo-taking and sight-seeing. In addition, the ancient town of Hoa Lu can easily captures tourists by its unique aspects.

The last but not least element that impresses visitors to Hoa Lu is the Festival Truong Yen which is held in February and March (Lunar calendar) which includes a chain of events that regain the spirit of the ancients Emperors: the March of Water, the Ritual for Dinh and Le Emperors, the performance of the old times, the Battles of DinhTien Hoang when he was a child, Cheo and Tuong performances, and a beauty contest for Hoa Lu women. This Festival brings back the memories of the old times, and helps the young people to have chance to know more about the traditions of their ancestors.

HO CHI MINH MAUSOLEUM
Opening Hours: Tuesday - Thursday 07:30 - 10:30, Saturday & Sunday 07:30 - 11:00
Location: 8 Hung Vuong, Dien Bien, Ba Dinh, Hanoi
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Ba Dinh Square is one of the most visited attractions in Hanoi. It is the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, the most iconic and popular leader of Vietnam, known to his people as ‘Uncle Ho’. His body is preserved here in a glass case at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in central Hanoi (albeit against his wishes).

For visitors, a trip to Uncle Ho’s final resting place can be an extraordinary experience as it is not just an average attraction; it’s a part of a unique history.

Started in 1973, the construction of the mausoleum was modeled on Lenin's mausoleum in Russia and was first open to the public in 1975. The granite building meant a great deal for many locals as it ensures that their beloved leader ‘lives on forever’.

Security is tight and visitors should dress with respect (no shorts, sleeveless shirts and miniskirts) and everyone has to deposit their bags and cameras before getting in. Visitors are not allowed to stop and hold the constant queue up as the place is constantly busy. Uncle Ho’s remains are sent yearly to Russia for maintenance therefore the mausoleum is closed usually from October onwards. It’s best to recheck with your hotel tour desk before visiting. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

CAT BA ISLAND
Cat Ba Island is the largest island in Halong Bay and is home to plenty of hotels, restaurants, and bars. Just about every tour company in Hanoi offers daily trips to the island, attracting travellers looking to enjoy a day of sightseeing during their holiday. Located off the coast of Hai Phong City, its beaches (named Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2) are great for sunbathing and swimming during the summer months. If you’re not a fan of crowds on the beach, you can charter a speedboat or rent a kayak to Monkey Island and Lan Ha Bay, where the beaches are cleaner and quieter.

Best Time to Go
The best time to go to Cat Ba Island is during the summer, between April and November. It’s also peak tourist season in Halong Bay, with numerous boat tours stopping on the island. The beaches can be very crowded with fellow tourists so we recommend heading there early to find a good spot. Make sure to book well in advance as hotels are also pricier this time of the year. For better deals, visit from September to November as crowds are significantly smaller as the climate on Cat Ba Island transitions into monsoon season.

Getting to Cat Ba Island
Getting to Cat Ba Island by boat is relatively easy, as there are plenty of tour agencies in Hanoi that offer one-way trips to the island. Priced at US$18 upwards per person, it’s inclusive of hotel pickup in Hanoi by van and a speedboat trip to Cat Ba Town. Alternatively, you can buy a ticket from Luong Yen Bus Station, which costs VND 250,000. After a three-hour bus ride to Hai Phong City, you board a hydrofoil to Phu Long Pier which takes about 30 minutes. From there, it’s another hour-long bus ride to Cat Ba Town.

Cat Ba Island Attractions
Cat Ba Island’s expansive beaches are relatively clean despite the growing numbers of resorts, hotels, restaurants, and tourist facilities. Swimming, snorkelling, and diving are the most popular things to do on the island. Travellers can also enjoy a day of trekking, caving, and rock-climbing on Cat Ba Island, specifically at the Cat Ba National Park. There are also an old fort on a hilltop, which houses several bunkers and rooms filled with war remains and propaganda posters.

Cat Ba Island Restaurants
Seafood is a must-try when you’re visiting Cat Ba Island. There are plenty of local eateries nearby the ferry terminal, serving a variety of local specialities such as geoduck clam, mantis shrimp, and oysters at affordable prices. Alternatively, make your way to Nui Ngoc Street, where you can find restaurants that cater mostly to international travellers. Local beers cost VND 15,000 while imported labels are about VND 45,000 upwards.

Cat Ba Island Nightlife
Nightlife on Cat Ba Island is understandably limited due to its reputation as a place for rest and relaxation. However, there are several expat-owned bars and bistros in the main town, where you can enjoy drinks and live music until late.

CON DAO ISLAND, BA RIA VUNG TAU PROVINCE
Con Dao Islands, also known as Con Dao National park, are an archipelago of 16 mostly uninhabited islets just off the southern coast of Vietnam, each of which offering expansive beaches shaded with evergreen trees. Great for savvy travellers looking to escape bustling city life, the main island also boasts miles of coastal roads, hiking trails and a wide range of outdoor activities.

The main (and only inhabited) island, Con Son was once the site of French-run prisons for Vietnamese involved in the independence movement. Most of the derelict prisons are located in Con Son Town, where you can visit the prison cells, and infamous tiger cages. Many locals visit Con Son to pay their respects to revolutionaries such as Vo Thi Sau, the first women on the island to have been executed by the French.

Aside from this rather bleak part of Con Son, the island has plenty of unspoilt beaches where you can enjoy a day of sunbathing, swimming, and dining on fresh seafood. Closest to the town is Bai An Hai Beach, which connects Ben Dam Harbour to several beachfront resorts and fishing villages. If you prefer privacy, rent a motorbike and make your way south towards Mui Ca Map (Shark Cape) and Nhat Beach to enjoy fine white sands and breathtaking views of the ocean.

Island-hopping and diving are popular activities on Con Dao Islands, where you can explore most of the uninhabited islets and spot various wildlife such as stingrays, barracudas, moray eels, and dugongs. Due to its status as a national park, you need to arrange your trip with Con Dao National Park Headquarters (29 Vo Thi Sau, Con Dao District, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province). Hon Bay Canh Island is renowned for its turtle breeding grounds, so if you’re visiting between June and September, you may even get a chance to watch turtles laying their eggs.

Best Time to Go
The best time to visit Con Dao Islands is during the dry season (November to February), but if you’re looking to see turtles nesting on Hon Bay Canh Island, visit between June and September. February till July is ideal for diving excursions as the waters around Con Dao have visibility averaging between 20 and 30 metres.

HUNG KING'S TEMPLE - ORIGIN POINT OF THE NATION
Hung King’s Temple heritage located in Co Tich hamlet, Hy Cuong commune, Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province, the place to worship the Hung Kings who are the first founder of the country, the ancestors of the Vietnamese people. In the old days, this land is the center of Van Lang’s capital, lies between two rivers as the two natural ramparts surrounding the ancient imperial city of the Hung Kings and high mountain ranges in the East. There were many rivers, lakes, hills and mountains and fertile fields raised by the two rivers, convenient and favorable for both people’s living and defense or withdrawal in case of tribal conflicts

Currently, traces of habitants residing under Hung Kings dynasty have been reflected by dozens of archaeological sites, densely distributed from Lam Thao district to Bach Hac – Viet Tri confluence. Such archaeological sites are the evidence of an age with copper metallurgy industry and wet rice cultivation of agricultural civilization which has been existed for thousands of years B.C.

Hung King’s Temple is the center, focus of Hung Kings age, the temples for worshiping Hung Kings located on Nghia Linh mountain (also known as Ca mountain by local or other names: Hung mountain, Hy Cuong mountain) at the elevation of 175 meters above sea level. This land area used be a tropical jungle and today Hung mountains is still a natural forest with different generations of trees including 150 species of plants belonging to 35 families, there are some great and old trees such as: banian, pine, cycad, parashorea…

From a distance, Hung mountain looks like a head of a big dragon heading towards the South, its body winding into Troc mountain, Van mountain and Pheo mountain. Behind Hung mountain are the big hills close together about 10km like a herd of elephants heading to the land of ancestors, in front of Hung mountain is Bach Hac crossroads with the confluence of the three biggest rivers in the North: Red River, Lo river and Da river which all make an immense waters from which are low hills like a flock of turtles stepping towards Nghia Linh. ..In the far East is innumerable Tam Dao range (Mother mountain), in the South is sky-high Ba Vi range (Father mountain) gathered. Close to Hung mountain are hills like phoenix (Tien Kien), tiger prostrating (Khang Phu – Chu Hoa). Imposing and spectacular landscape and position full of brave soul of mountains and rivers. Standing on the high peak of Nghia Linh we can see all of an immense area impressed by charming beauty of mountains and rivers. Legend has it that Hung King traveled a lot and found this place as fitting of his capital.

History of Hung King’s anniversary

“Not matter where you go
Remember come back on 10th of 3rd lunar month
Everybody knows that song
The country is ours thousands of years”

That folk-song full of affection and gratitude and strong love has been in the heart of each Vietnamese person from generation to generation. For thousands of years, Hung King’s temple is always a symbol of respect, honor and supernatural power closely and strongly attached with Vietnamese people.

In the old days, Hung Temple festivity has a special position in the minds of the Vietnamese people. The noble family annals of Hung Vuong (1470) has recorded that “From Dinh, Le, Ly, Tran dynasties then now Hong Duc Hau Le – our new dynasty, Vietnamese people burn incense in the temple in Trung Nghia village (Co Tich), where people around the country come to worship, commemorate the sacrifice and services of the ancestors “.

Until Nguyen dynasty in the 2nd year of Khai Dinh (1917) Le Trung Ngoc – Province Chief of Phu Tho submitted to the Ministry of Rites that March 10th of lunar year as the National Day (one day before the Hung Kings anniversary and the local people worshipped on March 11th of lunar year).

DA DIA REEF - PHU YEN PROVINCE
Vietnam is bestowed with many captivating natural wonders that really rare places in the world do. For instances, Ha Long Bay with the variety of quantity and display of islands, or Phong Nha-Ke Bang with amazing geological diversity. Lately, Vietnam is also known for the world’s largest cave, which will bring you a feeling like you are lost in the world of the well-known film “Avatar” – Son Doong Cave. In this article, Daily Travel will introduce you to an attraction that only 4 places in the world possess it, including Vietnam. It is Da Dia Reef.

Da Dia Reef (Ganh Da Dia or Ghenh Da Dia in Vietnamese) is structured with a surprising geology, including bountiful rocks in disparate shapes: circular, pentagonal, hexagonal or other polygonal looks. They are stacked together in a heap or fixed in pillars like plates overlapped each other. After surveying and testing sample, the geologists said that these are black and yellow basalt rocks. From a far corner, the whole area looks like a giant beehive.

Da Dia Reef is about 50 meters wide and stretches more than 200 meters. When it had not been researched, the landscape used to known as a place tinged with mythical color. Some people said that the reef was built by a giant to connect two areas. Other believed that the reef used to be a not hidden treasure, however, it turned into rocks to protect themselves from being taken away and in order to stay here forever.

When visiting Phu Yen, you should spend time checking-in with this usual masterpiece that the Nature gifted Vietnam. Then, you can immerse in the white seawater of Bai Bang beach. At Bai Bang beach, you can fulfil your stomach after playing hard with seafood because there is no food store at Da Dia Reef now. That is also the reason why Da Dia Reef still remains its pristine beauty.

THIEN MU PAGODA (PAGODA OF THE CELESTIAL LADY) - HUE CITY
The Pagoda of the Celestial Lady in Hue is for Vietnamese people one of the most important buildings in the country. This 7 storey pagoda on the banks of the Perfume River, within the grounds of a large temple, is the location of the many of the more important events, real and mythological, in Vietnamese history from the time its construction in 1601 through to modern times. The Pagoda has come to be associated with the aspirations of the Vietnamese people for religious, cultural and political freedoms.

There is a popular legend surrounding the circumstances under which the Pagoda of of the Celestial Lady (known locally as Thien Mu). This legend has several different versions depending upon which historical source you refer to.

One version is that the Nguyen Lord who ordered the construction of the Pagoda was visiting the hill upon which the Pagoda was later built spoke with a local person who told him that an old lady had foreseen that we would visit and later build the Pagoda. The other version of the legend is that the Lord himself met the old lady whilst surveying to establish the best place to establish the new capital city of Vietnam and that he built the Pagoda in her honour in return for the advice she gave him. Either way, the ‘Celestial Lady’ is the old lady in the legend.

The second of the great legends of the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady surrounds the story of the daughter of a noble who fell in love with a poor orphan boy. The girls family disapproved of the relationship and the pair met secretly at the Pagoda until the family finally decided that it was time that the girl got married and they arranged a match with a young man from a wealthy family. The unfortunate lovers decided that they would commit su***de together and made a pact to throw themselves into the Perfume River and spend eternity together. The tragic end to the story is that whilst the boy drowned the girl get swept to the banks of the river and was rescued by fishermen. The legend is that the boy’s spirit roams the banks of the river searching for his true love and many Vietnam people are superstitious about visiting the Pagoda with their girlfriend or boyfriend in case they suffer similar misfortune.

MU CANG CHAI - YEN BAI PROVINCE
Mu Cang Chai is home to some of Asia’s most magnificent cultivated topography. Rice terraces coil in ribbons around the hills to spectacular effect, luring photographers, hikers, and avid motorbikers. Ready for an adventure? Whatever you’re looking for, here are four things you’ll simply love about Mu Cang Chai.

Spectacular rice terraces
Mu Cang Chai’s sheer rice terraces were sculpted over centuries of small-scale cultivation. Each season brings its own charm.

During the summer, the terraces bulge with ripening rice stems that blanket the hills in a vibrant green. By early autumn, the rice plants have turned a bewitching golden yellow, ready for the harvest. In wintertime, the lonely terraces fill with water, creating cascading rows of reflective infinity pools. Once spring comes, the terraces transform into anthills of activity, as the farmers plant a new crop.

Vibrant Hmong culture
Mu Cang Chai is mainly populated by the Black Hmong, a subgroup of one of Vietnam’s largest ethnicities. Pretty Hmong villages are dotted around the district. Each one offers a glimpse into a rich culture.

Unlike many other minority groups in Vietnam, the Hmong don’t live in raised houses on wooden stilts. Instead, they build their homes on flattened earth. Hmong textile culture is highly developed, and you’ll find that many villagers – both men and women – still wear the traditional dress. Black Hmong men typically wear dark tunics and hats, while women wear longer tunics with arms and waistbands in bright colours.

Excellent motorbiking
Mu Cang Chai is one of the best places in Vietnam to take on the roads. You’ll find quality strips of tarmac that weave around oval hills and sky-high dirt tracks that cling to near-vertical cliff faces. Whether you want a gentle ride following trickling rivers or an adrenaline-filled dirt bike experience, Mu Cang Chai provides the stage.

Notable main roads include the magnificent stretch between Mu Cang Chai town and Tu Le via the Khau Pha mountain pass. For a gentle ride through ethnic Thai villages, continue to Nghia Lo before circling back. Off the main road, a ride up to Mo De village offers more great views on a mostly paved road.

Undiscovered hiking trails
Hiking is a great way to absorb Mu Cang Chai’s scenery at a slower pace. You’ll pass layers of rice terraces, tea and corn plantations, and higher up, primary tropical rainforest.

Hiking may be a new tourist activity in Mu Cang Chai, but the Hmong have been roaming these hills for centuries. Until recently, villagers travelled almost everywhere by foot, creating a network of trails that zigzag up the valleys and into the mountains. These trails connect every hamlet and provide excellent hiking routes for long and short forays.
