✈️ Air Cargo Market in August: Falling Rates, Rising Demand

🚀 INTRA-ASIA CARRIERS SURGE IN PROFITS THANKS TO HIGHER RATES & CARGO VOLUMES 📦

According to JOC, despite global economic uncertainties, Intra-Asia carriers enjoyed a booming first half of 2025, with net profits soaring on the back of rising freight rates and increased cargo volumes.

• SITC (Hong Kong): Average revenue per TEU (20-foot container) jumped 23% to USD 776/TEU, driving net profit up 80% to USD 630 million. Cargo volume also grew 7% to 1.8 million TEUs.
• TS Lines (Hong Kong): Net profit in the first half is expected to rise by a record 225%, reaching USD 180–200 million, fueled by high freight rates and chartering revenue.
• RCL (Thailand): Net profit climbed 130% to USD 124 million, supported by a 28% increase in freight revenue and a 12% rise in volume.

🛟 Key driver: JOC noted that freight rates and container volumes were supported by a shortage of shipping capacity, partly due to mainline carriers implementing blank sailings in April and May. This created a major growth opportunity for intra-Asia operators.

🚢 Aggressive expansion: Riding on strong financial results, several intra-Asia carriers are ramping up fleet investments and expanding services:
• TS Lines, SITC, along with Korean carriers Sinokor Merchant Marine and CK Line, have ordered 16 new vessels scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028. The largest order comes from Sinokor, with four 13,000-TEU ships worth USD 612 million.
• RCL has already taken delivery of six new vessels (7,000–12,000 TEU) earlier this year and launched a new Asia–Mexico service, extending its network beyond the region.

🚀 Vietnam to Export 5,000 Cargo UAVs to South Korea

On August 12, at the Vietnam – South Korea Economic Forum in Seoul, CT Group signed an agreement to export 5,000 cargo unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to South Korea, witnessed by General Secretary Tô Lâm and South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min Seok.

✈️ Manufactured by CT UAV, these UAVs have a payload capacity of 60–300 kg, an 85% localization rate, and integrate AI, semiconductor technology, and location identification systems. They have broad applications in cargo transportation, agriculture, rescue operations, security, and urban management, offering the potential to transform the logistics industry.

📊 According to Markets & Data, Vietnam’s UAV market was valued at USD 73 million in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 191 million by 2031. Penetrating a demanding market like South Korea demonstrates that Vietnam is ready to compete in high-level technology, paving the way for exports to other countries.

On the same day, CT Group also secured an order for 100 million semiconductor chips and entered into a technology training partnership with Inha University, further affirming its position in the high-tech sector.

🚨 EU TIGHTENS CUSTOMS RULES: VAGUE GOODS DESCRIPTIONS NOW BANNED 🚫

Starting September 1, 2025, the European Union (EU) will officially enforce the Import Control System 2 (ICS2) across all modes of transport – including air, sea, road, and rail. One of the major changes is the ban on vague or generic wording in customs declarations.

📌 The European Commission has published a list of over 200 banned words and phrases that are no longer acceptable in Entry Summary Declarations (ENS). If used, they will trigger automatic rejection of the ENS, requiring the filer to resubmit with more specific and accurate data.

❌ Commonly used but vague terms like:
– “As ordered”, “see invoice”, “sample”, “various goods”
– Broad categories such as “electronics”, “auto parts”, “machinery”, “documents”, “technology”, “clothing”, “shoes”, “vegetables”...
…are no longer permitted and will not meet the standard required for risk assessment.

⚠️ The ban also applies to sender and consignee information. Entries such as “private”, “unknown”, or “N/A” in name or address fields will result in rejection.

🎯 The goal of this new rule is to improve data quality, supporting more accurate pre-arrival risk analysis – especially for air cargo, postal shipments, and express consignments. TWO EVERGREEN SHIPS FACE BACK-TO-BACK INCIDENTS, OVER 80 CONTAINERS LOST AT SEA🔥

In just the first few days of August 2025, Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen Marine has faced two major container ship accidents:

📍 In Peru, on the morning of August 1st, the Ever Lunar was anchored off the coast of Callao when it was suddenly rocked—possibly due to a tsunami or extreme sea conditions. The incident caused around 50 containers to fall into the ocean, forcing the port to temporarily shut down. Fortunately, no crew members were injured. An investigation is currently underway.

📍 Earlier, on July 28th, the Ever Feat, en route from Brazil to Uruguay, was hit by strong winds and high waves near Rio Grande do Sul. The violent motion caused 30–40 containers to collapse, with some crushed or dangerously hanging off the ship. Upon arriving at Montevideo Port, local authorities established a restricted zone around the vessel to manage hazardous cargo, including fertilizer—raising concerns about possible chemical leaks.

⚠️ Evergreen is now working with maritime agencies to investigate both incidents and assess the damage. Experts are warning of increasingly unpredictable weather conditions posing a rising threat to global shipping.
