The end of our SE Asia adventure. Most pictures from the Hanoi Citadel and around town. The night market Friday- Sunday in the Old Quarter is great for watching people and you never know what you are going to see or find to eat. Through the miracle of time travel we fly from Hong Kong at 10:40pm on Tuesday and arrive in San Francisco at 8:05pm Tuesday.

We stayed 5 nights in Ha Long Bay before moving to Hanoi yesterday. It’s a beautiful large bay to walk along and there are several small attractions to see but the Bay is the real winner. Small floating villages, floating fish farms and the amazing limestone islands and islets. We chose the less crowded Lan Ha Bay in the other side of Cat Ba Island for a cruise that included kayaking, a stop on an island for bike riding and incredible views. Lan Ha Bay pictures start at kayaking photos and include the video.

Lost in translation. It’s been quite the day here in Ha Long. We are on Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. The final cap to our day was how google translated this nice load of sweet bread- swipe to see. It all started early and kept going… the hotel said we could borrow their bikes when we checked in, then last night said it was first come first serve, then this morning staff said they could only be ridden at the resort. There are no roads or paths to ride within the resort. Not so helpful. Then at lunch- our one and only fast food lunch(LOTTERIA- pretty sure it’s a Korean chain with a Spanish name) since leaving California, at the mall…how come the drink in the set meal can’t be changed from a regular to Diet Pepsi but a combo meal can? It was the same cost! Hmm. A critique of every museum including today’s museum in SE Asia thank you for the English translation but really the spell check is just terrible. We have wanted to spend the last 2 1/2 months editing signage. But we are still thankful for the English. And lastly why does the hotel housekeeping keep coming between 6 and 8pm to clean? It was already cleaned between 12-4pm, each time.

A few more pictures of Da Nang and then Hoi An. We went to The old town of Hoi An as part of an overnight trip. It was beautiful to see it all lit up and the architecture was great to see. We stopped at the Precious Heritage Art Gallery. This is a gallery of photos from many of the different ethnic groups in Vietnam. Check out the link. Some of you may recognize the photos. https://www.rehahnphotographer.com/portfolio/precious-heritage-collection-vietnam/

Celebrated the arrival of spring with a guided bike ride through the countryside outside of Da Nang. With the assistance of an e-bike we went 30km, stopped at the stream for snacks and had lunch in a small village. Bee Bike Hub was excellent.

We are about halfway through our visit in Da Nang. The weather is nice and warm again so we can do more outdoor things. We’ve been to the Museum of Cham Sculpture, Da Nang History Museum, Marble Mountain for its caves and temples and sat at Tien Sa Beach (video). The beaches are beautiful.

Hue, Vietnam’s Imperial City. Really a walled city with multiple gates, a moat, gardens, temples, homes, library and even a tennis court. Home to the Imperial Family 1803-1945. The palace itself was renovated in the 1920s to reflect Asian- French architecture. We really liked the different gates throughout the complex. What is seen is due to restoration efforts and many areas are still works in progress. There is also an onsite classroom teaching historic preservation.

A quick 4 days in Ho Chi Minh City It’s a much bigger and modern city than we anticipated. We only saw a tiny bit. For Frank’s birthday we found a parade in Chinatown celebrating the first full moon of the new lunar year.

Great 2 1/2 weeks in Siem Reap. We saw much more than just the ancient temples. We went to a Lotus Flower farm, plenty of art museums and workshops, saw an evening parade, went bird watching, played with kittens at the cat cafe and even managed to play mini golf. The video is from an exhibit at the SM Art Center. The entire installation is handmade on site. So beautiful.

Fourth and final day visiting Temples. It was also our 3rd trip with a guide and we could not have seen them without a car. I put numbers in the bottom left corner. 1) Early 10th century Kravan Temple. It is all brick with brick carved artwork inside. 2) Pre Rup temple 40 years after Kravan temple mid- 10th century. The first use of laterite stone for height and is also the model for Angkor Wat. 3) Banteay Srei temple late 10th century. This is made from pink sandstone which gives it more strength and it makes it heavy. The carvings are very intricate with little damage. 4) Boeang Malea Temple- all in ruin. This was the home of the Khmer Rouge until they surrendered in 1999. The government is deliberately not restoring this temple and had chosen to only stabilize to prevent further damage. It is 1 hour from Siem Reap and not many tourists visit.
