RICE TERRACES

Seamlessly embroidered on the rocky terrain .

The slopes of the mountains act as a fabric upon which these rice terraces are tailored and custom made depending on the degree of slant and hardness of the rocks .

With minimal equipment and largely by hand , these exquisite art - charecteristics steps - are elaborately carved out by the locals - Dzao ethnic minority .

The water filled terraces act as sequins in a embroidered fabric - the glittering embellishments reflecting the sunlight . The unmistakable gradient of the varying greens and browns in this colour spectrum makes one wonder if even the gods have joined hands in creating this fabulous art piece.

Women are more commonly found employed in the sowing of saplings in the fields. Bend over their back , for hours together , they plant the rice saplings , with a quick deft of hand , thrusting them deep into the soft soil . From afar , those slender tender green stalks look like the Turkey work embroidery stiches employed to fill in the roughly drawn out patches on a piece of fabric on which the women are diligently and intricately weaving them into.
