In Denmark, where cycling is woven into daily life, even traffic lights are designed with riders in mind. At busy intersections, small metal footrests are mounted beside the signal poles at just the right height. When the light turns red, cyclists can glide up, place one foot on the support, and remain comfortably balanced without hopping off their bikes. It’s a tiny adjustment to infrastructure, yet it transforms the waiting experience into something smoother and more dignified.

The idea reflects a culture that prioritizes bicycles as seriously as cars. Instead of forcing riders to step down onto wet pavement or awkwardly tip sideways, the city meets them halfway. The footrests reduce strain, improve stability, and keep traffic flowing efficiently when the light turns green again. Commuters heading to work, parents carrying children, and students racing to class all benefit from a design detail many cities would overlook.

What seems like a minor addition quietly signals a bigger philosophy. Urban planning here does not treat cyclists as an afterthought but as a central part of the system. In Denmark, innovation isn’t always loud or dramatic — sometimes it’s simply a place to rest your foot while waiting for the world to turn green.

How much space do cyclists really need?

Researchers from Monash University in Australia have found that a cyclist needs 1.5 meters of cycle path to ride comfortably. This matches the clearance profile recommended by CROW for cycle paths with curbs higher than 5 centimeters.

A wider cycle path lets cyclists ride safely and comfortably, with room to steer, overtake, and avoid others or obstacles.
