Every so often, we get message that sounds something like this:

“Can you transport my two Basenjis to Kansas for $400?”

And I get it. Truly. On the surface, it feels like a reasonable ask. It’s just a drive, right?

But here’s the part most people never see—the behind-the-scenes math that keeps a professional, safe, fully insured pet transport business running.

Let’s walk through a real-world example.

The Trip: 1,700 Miles Round Trip 🚐🐾

For this scenario, we’re looking at a 1,700-mile round trip using real, current numbers:

Gas: $5 per gallon

Fuel usage: 15 gallons per 500 miles

Driver pay: $25/hour

Vehicle + insurance + business insurance: $780/month

Oil changes: $150 every 5,000 miles

No fluff. No inflated numbers. Just reality.

What It Actually Costs

That brings the trip total to:

Keep my vehicle safe and road-ready

Carry proper insurance (for both me and your pet)

Plan for breakdowns, delays, and the unexpected

Continue offering this service long-term

So… Why Not $409?

Because $409 doesn’t even cover the driver.

At that price, something has to give. And in this industry, what gives is often:

Proper insurance

Safe driving practices (think rushing, overloading, or skipping rest)

Vehicle maintenance

Individual care and attention for your pet

And those are not corners I’m willing to cut.

When we started nationwide pet transporting 6 years this month, fuel was $1.19-1.45. Today, fuel prices are over $4 a gallon. Oil changes went from $45 to $110. Transmissions from $2500 to $5k. Hotels from $60 to $130. A meal from $6 to $15.

When we quote you for transport, we cover expenses and our time. The response "I can do it myself for cheaper" might or might not be true. 2-4 days without pay from your job plus the other expenses.

When booking a transporter you are also paying for your pets care 24/7. Cheaper is not always better. You get what you pay for! Choose a transporter with verifiable reviews, references, certifications, insurance, and experience. Choose a transporter that offers gps tracking, videos and photos throughout your pets journey. Choose a transporter with great communication.

When you buy a puppy that's not local, include a budget for transport. Do not tell them "I paid $5k for a puppy and I only have $300 left for transport."

Also, please keep in mind we choose our clients just like a client chooses their transporter. We do not entertain rude clients and do not want nor need your business.
