I’m learning that the things that create the most discomfort in business are often pointing directly toward the work that needs to be done.

Worried about finances?

Get clearer about the numbers.

Frustrated by inconsistency?

Build better systems.

Concerned about the customer experience?

Listen, measure, train, and improve.

Feeling overwhelmed as a leader?

Get clear about the priorities.

It is tempting to avoid the areas of a business that make us uncomfortable.

But avoiding them rarely makes them better.

Sometimes the problem isn’t just a problem.

It’s an invitation to grow.

Our goal at Moving with Grace isn’t to build a perfect company.

It’s to keep becoming a better one.

One of the hardest parts of growing a business is looking honestly at the things you haven’t done well.

The goals you didn’t hit.

The systems you didn’t build.

The changes you knew needed to happen but kept putting off.

It is easy to look backward and think, We should be further along by now.

But I’ve realized there isn’t much value in beating myself up over where we should be.

There is tremendous value in learning from it.

Past mistakes can teach us where we need more discipline, better systems, clearer expectations, or stronger leadership.

But they don’t get to determine what we build next.

At Moving with Grace, we’re continuing to look honestly at where we can improve and then doing the work to get better.

You don’t have to start from where you think you should be.

You start from where you are.

And you take the next right action.

A question worth sitting with today:

What would change if we focused less on controlling the outcome and more on faithfully taking the right action in front of us?

In business and in life, we can’t control every result.

But we can control how we show up.

Do the next right thing. Serve well. Trust the process.

A number is information. It is not prophecy.

That’s a lesson I’m learning as a business owner.

Numbers matter.

Revenue matters. Leads matter. Marketing results matter. Customer reviews matter. Profitability matters.

We need to look at all of it honestly if we want to build a healthy business.

But there’s a difference between using numbers to make wise decisions and allowing numbers to create fear about the future.

I’ve caught myself doing both.

When something isn’t working, fear can make you want to pull back.

Don’t make the call.

Don’t send the email.

Don’t try the new idea.

Don’t put yourself out there.

Don’t risk hearing no.

But avoiding rejection isn’t the same thing as being safe.

Running Moving with Grace continues to teach me that leadership requires being willing to act when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

A realtor may not respond to our email.

A marketing idea may not work.

A potential customer may choose another moving company.

A decision may turn out differently than we hoped.

None of those things relieve us of the responsibility to keep showing up, learning, adjusting, serving people well, and doing the next right thing.

I’m trying to build this company on spiritual principles, and one of those principles is learning to separate faithful action from my need to control the result.

Look honestly at the numbers.

Learn from them.

Make the best decision you can.

Take action.

Then release the outcome and keep moving forward.

That’s true in business.

And I’m finding it’s pretty true in life too.

Some days in business test you more than others.

This week brought a damaged fire exit sign resulting in a $1,700 claim. Really? I had no idea a small sign hanging from the ceiling could be worth that much.

We also had a truck found out of compliance during a CHP inspection and a communication breakdown that left a customer disappointed.

None of these are the outcomes we strive for, but they are opportunities to learn, improve, and lead.

One lesson I’ve learned as a business owner is that problems are inevitable. What matters is how we respond to them.

The shift I’m working on is:

Problem → Fear → Control

to

Problem → Pause → Align → Action

Every challenge is a chance to improve our systems, strengthen our team, and better serve our customers.

The challenges are part of the responsibility. The ability to serve is the privilege.

Anybody can move furniture.

Not everybody takes the time to protect it.

Our team takes pride in doing the little things right because those little things matter to our customers.

Behind every moving company logo is a real person carrying responsibility most people never see.

This morning I joined a Zoom call with moving company owners and leaders from across the country. We talked about business growth, hiring, operations, marketing, customer service, leadership, struggles, wins, and everything in between.

What I appreciated most was the openness.

No pretending. No acting like everything is perfect. Just honest conversations about what it takes to lead people, serve families well, and continue building businesses with integrity in a challenging world.

One thing I continue to learn is that growth happens faster when leaders are willing to learn from each other instead of competing with each other.

Every company has different systems and strategies, but the common thread is people trying to improve, support their teams, provide for their families, and become better leaders.

Leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about staying teachable, being willing to listen, and continuing to grow through both success and adversity.

Grateful for the opportunity to connect with other movers across the country who are committed to doing things the right way and continuing to raise the standard in this industry.

One thing I’m continuing to learn about business, leadership, and networking is that relationship building is really about showing up consistently.

This morning I had the chance to connect with my friend Jerry Hernandez from Mason McDuffie Mortgage while checking out a beautiful new listing from Theresa Deardorff with RE/MAX Woodland.

Sometimes networking is not about trying to impress anyone or forcing conversations. Sometimes it’s simply about being present, supporting others, learning, connecting, and being part of the community.

Those small consistent moments and relationships are what build trust over time.

Grateful to be connected with good people who are working hard to serve others well in our community.
