The Westfield Train Station

The Westfield Train Station 2024 marks the 120th anniversary of the Westfield Train Station! It was constructed in 1904, for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. the same year.

Built in 1904, the former Lake Shore and Michigan Southern and New York Central Railroad passenger depot is an historic train station located in Westfield, New York. Former Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway and New York Central Railroad Station is a historic train station located at Westfield in Chautauqua County, New York. It is a 1 1⁄2-story brick, terra cotta, and sandstone structure in

the Romanesque style. It served as the main transfer point for rail passenger destined for the Chautauqua Institution. In 1983, the Station was sold by Conrail to the Landmark Society of Chautauqua County and then to John Sarif, Jr. In 1988, Dr. Randall Swanson purchased the station and lovingly restored and maintained the station up to his untimely death in 2011. Robert Galbraith purchased the building in 2012 and has carried on Dr. Swansons legacy as the new steward of the facility. Robert's wife Katherine is the proprietor of The Station Art Gallery, now housed in the historic building and open during the summer months from late May to Labor Day.

I was researching when the station applied and received National Historic Register designation and I came across the entire package including pictures. The pictures give you all some insight to what poor condition the station was in when a few visionaries rescued it from Conrail. Much credit goes to the late Dr. Randy Swanson, who owned it from the mid 80's until 2012 and restored much of the station with loving care.

The train station just underwent some needed restoration. The entire fascia was replaced and painted, so it now looks as good as it did when it was built (at least close!).
The station will be available for special events in 2025 so please let me know if you are interested in more information or would like to make a reservation.

I am late in posting this, however this was an outstanding event for Katherine and our community. This past Labor Day weekend was the final exhibition of Katherine's Painting the Faces of Chautauqua works. In 2022 she undertook a project to paint people of Chautauqua County. This consisted of a fascinating cross section of people from our county from farmers, business people, politicians, first responders, skilled craftsman and veterans. Overall she painted 44 paintings, each of which she did in 3 hours with the subject sitting for her. This was a a significant undertaking which she did with enthusiasm and dedication.
Here posted are photos from the reception which was well attended. Special Thanks to Johnson Estate Winery for their outstanding catering and wines.

Please see the attached Youtube video on the moving of Bessemer and Lake Erie steam locomotive 643. This beautiful locomotive was sitting in an old warehouse in Mckees Rocks PA around 2007 or 2008. One cold dreary January day we went under the fence and went into this old train shed to reveal this beautiful piece of rail history and American engineering. We took many pictures and Katherine ended up painting a series of paintings commemorating this locomotive. Some of you that have been to the Train Station and will recall the beautiful work of hers titled the Grey Ghost. It is one of her signature works that we treasure.
The good news is that this locomotive has been saved and is now at a museum in Ohio.

At the end of January 2023, several years' worth of work to get the B&LE 643 moved from McKees Rocks, PA, to the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek...
