Every day, across the country, neighbors are helping neighbors.

A volunteer driver uses their own car to take someone to a doctor’s appointment. A ride to the pharmacy. A trip to the grocery store.

These moments may seem small, but together they form a powerful, grassroots response to a growing national need.

At the same time, millions of older Americans are stranded without transportation. The answer is already out there. It is sitting in driveways across the country.

America’s Volunteer Driver Center (AVDC) is bringing these two realities together. As the national center of the public information campaign for volunteer driver recruitment, AVDC is working to connect willing volunteer drivers with thousands of nonprofit transportation providers nationwide.

On April 22, ITNAmerica will formally introduce this effort during the Philanthropic Collaborative for Volunteer Transportation. This event brings together leaders from philanthropy, healthcare, business, and government, along with the people doing this work every day, to grow a national effort rooted in local action.

If this work matters to you, we hope you will pull up a chair and join us.

Thirty Years of Connecting Communities.

Thirty years ago, ITNAmerica’s founder, Katherine Freund, was driving past a McDonald’s… and then a Jiffy Lube… when inspiration struck:

“If you can connect hamburgers and oil changes nationwide, why not connect nonprofit transportation organizations?”

Every community faces the same hurdles—helping older adults and people with mobility challenges stay connected to the places and people they love. Katherine realized that if local, volunteer-based transportation programs could work together and share lessons through a national network, they could go further, faster.

From that spark, ITN was born.

Today, ITNAmerica has supported more than 1.6 million rides and hundreds of nonprofit transportation providers across the country—offering the technology, training, research, and policy leadership that help communities thrive.

Join ITNAmerica as we celebrate 30 years of innovation, impact, and community in Portland, Maine, at our annual meeting this November 10–12, and stay for the special 30th anniversary celebration dinner, Wednesday, November 12 from 6-9 pm.

🚗 Letting Go of the Keys
How do families start the conversation about driving safety with the people they love?

As ITNAmerica launches our new website, Katherine Freund is sharing a four-part blog series about one of life’s most sensitive transitions — moving from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat.

In this first post, she revisits her own parents’ story and what she has learned since.

💡 Try to involve family members. Support, don’t confront. Start before there’s a crisis.

ITNAmerica is celebrating 30 years of service as the nation’s first nonprofit transportation network for older adults and people with mobility challenges.

Long before Uber and Lyft, ITN had a vision for door-through-door and arm-through-arm rides in private vehicles for older adults and people with visual impairments.

1.6 million rides later, the median age of older people we serve is 83, and 61% have a mobility issue.

Visit our new website (https://www.itnamerica.org/resources/events/ ) to learn more, and if you like what you see, join us for our Annual Meeting, November 10, 11 &12 in Portland, Maine, and stay for the 30th Anniversary Celebration.
