Our Big Sur camping trip definitely did not go as planned, but it turned into a pretty incredible weekend. 🏕️❤️
Sadly, the Plaskett Creek area in Big Sur, where CGA has been camping for years, was impacted by the current wildfire and our campground had to close. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fire, and we hope everyone in the area stays safe.
Thanks to some quick thinking and a very flexible group, many of our campers were able to pivot with us to an alternate campground in San Simeon and still make the weekend happen!
We explored Morro Rock, went on some beautiful hikes, saw the elephant seals, and several of our members even witnessed a humpback whale and her baby from the San Simeon Pier. 🐋 We kept our tradition alive with onesie night, enjoyed some fantastic meals, and patched everything together with the food and supplies everyone had brought, even though part of our original group couldn’t make it because of the fire.
A HUGE thank you to Troy Brown and Jeff Lind for helping make the pivot happen, and of course to our amazing Kitchen Captain, Adventure Director and social host extraordinaire, Bob Gillan, for once again helping bring everyone together. ❤️
This weekend was also a very special one for CGA as we celebrated Chris Smith, our founder and former Executive Director, on his final California camping trip before his move to Arizona. After nearly 10 years of CGA adventures, it was a fitting sendoff — not quite the Big Sur weekend we originally planned, but one filled with friendship, laughter, teamwork and a whole lot of CGA spirit.
We think everyone who made the pivot would give this weekend a solid 5 out of 5. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sometimes the unexpected adventures are the ones that remind us what CGA is really all about.
This is CGA. ❤️🏕️🌈
