New data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) found that passenger traffic in September was over 50 percent higher than last year.

The IATA revealed total traffic in September 2022 rose 57 percent compared to September 2021, bringing global traffic to 73.8 percent of September 2019 levels.

Worldwide domestic traffic for September was up 6.9 percent compared to 2021, reaching 81 percent of the September 2019 level. United States domestic traffic climbed 16.8 percent in September compared to last year, pushing it to 0.4 percent above the September 2019 level.

North American carriers had a 128.9 percent traffic rise in September versus the 2021 period, with capacity increasing 63 percent and load factor climbing 24.6 percentage points to 85.4 percent.

International traffic climbed 122.2 percent versus September 2021, reaching 69.9 percent of September 2019 levels. All markets reported strong growth, led by Asia-Pacific.

“Even with economic and geopolitical uncertainties, the demand for air transport continues to recover ground,” IATA Director General Willie Walsh said. “The outlier is still China with its pursuit of a zero COVID strategy keeping borders largely closed and creating a demand roller coaster ride for its domestic market, with September being down 46.4% on the previous year.”

“That is in sharp contrast to the rest of Asia-Pacific, which, despite China’s dismal performance, posted a 464.8% increase for international traffic compared to the year-ago period,” Walsh continued.

Travel in the U.S. just got a bit cheaper, as well, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announcing last week that enrollment and renewal costs for TSA PreCheck would be reduced.

A New Electric Air Taxi Route Will Take Travelers From Newark Airport to Manhattan in Minutes

Long drives to the airport on traffic-choked roads may soon be a distant vestige of travel. The rise of air taxi routes—operated by electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL)—promises to slash many miles-long commutes to the airport to just a few minutes.

On Thursday, the eVTOL industry took a major step toward making this a reality: United Airlines and Archer Aviation, an eVTOL aircraft manufacturer, announced they're launching the first-ever air taxi route between New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport and Manhattan. The service, slated to debut in 2025, is the world's first definitive route announcement for an eVTOL aircraft.

Flown by Archer's all-electric, four-passenger Midnight aircraft, the new route will whittle down travel time between Newark and Manhattan to less than 10 minutes. (A journey by car can take more than an hour due to traffic.) United will use the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, on Pier 6 just above Battery Park, as its flight base on the island.

Similar air transfers from Manhattan to JFK airport in Queens have previously been offered by helicopter companies like Blade. But eVTOL aircraft are a quieter and more sustainable alternative. “Once operational, electric air taxis will fundamentally change how United customers experience comfort, convenience, and efficiency during their commutes to the airport,” Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures, said in a release on Thursday. “Archer’s New York to Newark route marks another important benchmark towards providing a carbon-neutral and safe commute that drastically reduces the travel time and produces a fraction of the sound emitted by helicopters."

It's not clear how much a ticket on the eVTOL aircraft will cost, but for comparison, fares on Blade's helicopter routes to JFK start at $195 one way.

United and Archer have plans to launch similar airport-to-city-center routes across the country. The New York launch is “the first of many routes we’ll be announcing alongside United as we work to build out our national UAM [urban air mobility] network,” according to Archer’s founder and CEO, Adam Goldstein. In August, United spent $10 million on a down payment for 100 of Archer's eVTOL aircraft, indicating that a rapid expansion of similar routes could be in the pipeline.

Airlines have come under fire for the majority of 2022 as they struggle to meet demand amid pilot and other staffing shortages as well as suspended routes, reduced capacity on existing ones and potentially looming strikes.

Appearing on the TODAY Show in New York City this week, Delta CEO Ed Bastian was adamant that travelers flying the Atlanta-based carrier have little to worry about this winter.

"We're ready. We've hired 25,000 people since the start of last year and there was a lot of training and experience that needed to be acquired but we're ready to go and we're expecting more than 5 million people for the Thanksgiving week," he said.

"We're absolutely prepared at Delta."

When asked about the potential for a crippling pilot strike ahead of the Christmas holiday, Bastian said "there's no possibility that they could go on strike for Thanksgiving, Christmas or anytime."

"We are in mediation with the National Mediation Board and there are many phases and stages to go. We're actually a lot closer than people like to think in terms of trying to get this deal done," he told TODAY.
