We took these pictures today.
In 1873 the United States Army built the first structure on Pikes Peak’s summit, a Signal Corps’ weather station. It was built of the stone available at hand. Unexpectedly it also served as shelter for summit visitors who were unprepared for the altitude and cold. They quit using it around 1888.

We just took this picture on our Pikes Peak Cog Railway trip.

"Chinaman" the Donkey

The most famous donkey from the railroad's construction history.

While working on the line, Chinaman carried a heavy pack of dynamite. Tragically, the dynamite accidentally detonated, killing the donkey and two nearby workers.

While the workers' bodies were taken down the mountain for proper burials, the railway crew buried Chinaman right on the mountain out of respect for their favorite work animal. They constructed a circular stone outline to mark the grave and erected a small wooden cross.
