If you've lived in the DC area for a few winters, you've learned some things the hard way.

Local winter wisdom:

Snow that wouldn't faze Boston or Chicago can significantly slow things down here.

Black ice loves our bridges. The Key Bridge, Memorial Bridge, and the overpasses on 66 and 495 - they freeze first and thaw last.

Federal government closures change everything. When the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announces liberal leave or closure, traffic patterns become completely unpredictable.

The mixing of rain, sleet, and snow is our specialty. Pure snow is actually easier - it's the freezing rain that causes real problems here.

Rock Creek Parkway becomes an ice rink. Locals know to avoid it at the first mention of freezing temperatures.

Side streets in Georgetown, Capitol Hill, and Old Town Alexandria may not see a plow for days. Plan accordingly.

The good news? Most winter days here are perfectly manageable. It's the 4-5 surprise events each season that remind us to stay prepared.

Did you know the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony has been a Washington tradition since 1923?

President Calvin Coolidge lit the first National Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve 1923, and it's been an annual tradition ever since (except during World War II). The tree stands on the Ellipse, and the lighting ceremony typically happens in early December.

Some fascinating facts: The original 1923 tree was a 48-foot Balsam Fir from Vermont. Today's tree is a living Colorado Blue Spruce, planted in 2012, that stands about 30 feet tall. Around the main tree are 56 smaller trees representing all U.S. states and territories, each decorated to reflect its unique heritage.

The ceremony includes musical performances, and it's become one of the most beloved holiday traditions in the capital. The tree stays lit every evening through New Year's Day.

The holiday decorations throughout DC are stunning this time of year. From the tree lighting to the decorations on the monuments, the city takes on a magical quality in December.
