ACRP - Airport Cooperative Research Program

ACRP - Airport Cooperative Research Program The Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) is an industry-driven, applied research program. ACRP can address any issue faced by airport operators.

The Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) is an industry-driven, applied research program that develops near-term, practical solutions to problems faced by airport operators. ACRP is managed by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Some projects may apply to only sp

ecific types of airports, such as general aviation or air carrier airports, while others apply to virtually all airports. Projects may target areas as diverse as safety, security, operations, environment, planning, design, construction, maintenance, administration, policy, and human resources.

🔦 Problem Statement Spotlight 🔦

One of last year's approved problem statements was No. 26-1182, or "Guide of Practical Tools & Lessons Learned for Supporting Weather-Related Airport Infrastructure Resilience Investments."

This problem statement was based on discussions that occurred at the 2025 ACRP Insight Event: Preparing U.S. Airport Infrastructure for Weather Events. This research will be critical as intense and unprecedented weather events continue to affect airport infrastructure planning, operations, and investment.

Join us on May 27 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM (ET) for our next webinar, "Getting Ahead of Airport Parking Reservation Systems and Techniques." Based on ACRP Synthesis 140, this webinar will explore how online booking systems can allow customers to reserve and prepay for parking, improving convenience while helping airports better manage demand and enhance revenue.

We'll discuss the benefits, costs, and implementation challenges associated with these systems, as well as considerations for airports evaluating whether to adopt them. Speakers include Steve Van Beek (Steer Group) and Adrian Leung (Steer Group) Cody Bauman (Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport will moderate our Q&A session.

Enhancing the passenger experience is central to an airport's success, especially with the increased terminal wait time we've seen in recent decades. Our latest Impact on Practice from Philadelphia International Airport highlights its restroom modernization program, which addresses evolving passenger needs holistically.

We love to see ACRP research driving impactful change, as Report 130 has for PHL's restroom planning and design initiative. Dive further into the Impact on Practice here: https://ow.ly/LajX50YIuZj

As they become more widespread, autonomous, automated, connected, and electric vehicles (ACES; think Waymo) will increasingly affect airport landside operations. Airport operators will have to consider accessibility, costs, legal and regulatory implications, sustainability, and resilience as ACES innovation grows. Not to mention the changing flow of curbside traffic and other passenger terminal facilities.

ACRP Research Report 269: Enhancing Airport Access with Emerging Mobility provides strategies for current and future transportation technologies and for facilities that incorporate these emerging technologies. Explore more of the report's insights here: https://ow.ly/EKPU50YIuEZ
