Last summer we attended the launch of our neighbors on the Vineyard, Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway,as they unveiled a 28-foot whaleboat replica of one ofthe originals carried aboard Whaleship Charles W. Morgan.

Whaleship Charles W. Morgan sailed yesterday for her first time under sail since her final voyage in 1921. She is the last remaining wooden whaling ship and the oldest American commercial vessel still in existence as well as a National Historic Landmark. She will come to the Vineyard in the middle of June.

The news just keeps on getting better for whales!

The whales of the Southern Ocean are not going to be hunted this year for the first time in over a century after the Government of Japan has officially cancelled the planned hunt this year.

The Vineyarders sailing team is looking good this year. Coach Andrew Burr believes the Vineyarders have what it takes to qualify for the Mark Trophy (New England top eight) for the first time. "The Vineyarders also hope to reach the fleet racing O’Day finals for the first time in six years."

There is a wonderful article in the January 2014 issue of "Yachting," called "Time Stands Still," by Bill Mayher, with photography by Benjamin Mendlowitz.

The article features two wooden classics Juno (built by our neighbors on MVY Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway) and Spartan (a rebuilt NY 50 who has just turned 100).

I couldn't find the link on their website, but it is an amazing article if you have a chance to find the magazine.
