Montcalm County Skywarn

Montcalm County Skywarn These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many Americans. To obtain critical weather information, NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, established SKYWARN® with partner organizations. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters.

Montcalm Skywarn training is back! We are combining with Gratiot County until otherwise stated. Current certifications are required for active volunteers and must be completed every 2 years. This also applies to online Skywarn training. All in-person training attendees that are in Montcalm county will be added to a volunteer roster and issued spotter IDs. We are now making it easier to volunteer. We also use Zello and GMRS radios, in addition to ham radio. For GMRS, you need a license and call sign, but no test is required, unlike ham radio. We will eventually have a setup to help people obtain their GMRS licenses, as Zello can be unreliable due to its reliance on phone data or WiFi.
