Today, stop by the Van Wert Airport. 100 years ago the US Navy flying boat the NC-4 was flying across the Atlantic Ocean. May 1919. The first plane to ever do this.
Van Wert County's own, Walter Hinton, was a pilot as part fo the 6 man crew.

Stop out this Saturday, May 18 - breakfast and lunch there by Crisis Care Line and Collins Fine Foods - help support our local Crisis Care Line. Airplanes, model airplanes. Pilot fly-in day. Bonus --> stop out before 12 noon to hear, at 12 noon, Michaella Johnson, Queen Jubilee of the 2019 Peony Festival, sing the Star Spangled Banner with the American Legion Presentation of Colors. That is worth the trip and get your lunch while there folks.

A navy crew piloted an NC-4 across the Atlantic Ocean, from Queens to Lisbon, Portugal, on May 8, 1919.

October 4, 1939, Wednesday, local newspaper article about Dr. L. M. Githens, pilot from Wren, Ohio, made his solo flight from the Van Wert Airport, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 1939. He was the fourth student pilot to solo from the present airport. He had completed 10 hours of instruction and made his solo flight in a Piper Club.
"Several planes also visited the airport Tuesday. John Yoder, WOWO announcer from Fort Wayne, flew in a Taylorcraft, and Dr. Leonard Nippe of Toledo with John English of Toledo as a passenger arrived in a Cub coupe. Captain Harold Preston of Fort Wayne brought his tri-motored Stinson plane here Tuesday and will remain the rest of the week for passenger flights."
