Andy was the very definition of resilience.
Andy Detwiler’s story is one of courage, adaptability, and a determination to keep moving forward no matter what life placed in his path.
In 1972, when Andy was only about two and a half years old, a grain auger accident on his family’s farm in Ohio changed his life forever. He lost both of his arms, but because he was so young, learning a new way to do things became part of growing up.
Over the years, Andy taught himself how to handle everyday tasks using his feet. He learned to write, eat, drive, and complete many activities independently. Instead of seeing his situation as a reason to step away from the life he loved, he found ways to adapt and continue.
As an adult, Andy returned to farming on his family’s large corn and soybean operation near West Liberty, Ohio. Farming is physically demanding work, but Andy found his own methods. He operated tractors and combines, worked on machinery, fueled equipment, and handled repairs using his feet, along with his shoulder, chin, and teeth when needed.
Later, his family shared his daily life through their YouTube channel, The Harmless Farmer. With help from his daughter Kylie, Andy showed viewers how he worked, fixed machines, and solved problems in creative ways. The channel grew to more than 130,000 subscribers and inspired people around the world.
Andy also shared an important message through his motivational talks: “Never Give Up.”
In 2020, Andy revealed that he was being treated for esophageal cancer. Even while facing health challenges, he continued farming and sharing his story with others until his passing on September 21, 2022, at age 52.
After his death, the community created a memorial to honor him. A larger-than-life bronze statue was made by sculptor Mike Major and placed near West Liberty, Ohio. The statue shows Andy ready to return to work, with his feet highlighted — a symbol of the determination that defined his life.
Andy’s story reminds us that strength is not always about having no obstacles. Sometimes, it is about finding a way forward despite them.
