Today we’re removing a large hive from the insides of a sofa at the LA county sheriffs deputy training facility. This hive is gigantic and has only been there for a couple of months. They’re very gentle and very strong.

One of the most common questions I get is, “Why aren’t you wearing a bee suit?”

The answer depends on the situation. This colony was calm, the queen was quickly located and caged, and the bees had very little reason to become defensive. Reading the colony’s behavior is an important part of every removal.

Every hive is different, and safety always comes first.

Most people only see the finished result.

What they don’t see is the heat, the cramped spaces, the awkward positions, the stings, and the hours spent carefully working a colony out of a structure.

This attic removal was one of those jobs.

What you’re looking at are the cause of the vast majority of problems in beehives across the globe. Those little red dots are called. Verroa destructor mites. They feed on the developing larva, weaken their immune system and introduce viruses which eventually kill the hive. They are the reason Beekeeepers lose a substantial amount of their hives every winter. Did you lose any beehives this winter?

When the weather gets hot, the bees come out of the hive to keep them cool and protect the babies from overheating.

This is a hive removal from a stucco wall. The hive found their way in from the other side through a small hole. Like most hives this one was calm and gentle and the queen was successfully captured in the queen clip.

This colony chose one of the most difficult places imaginable to build a hive.

Hidden inside the parapet of a third-story commercial building, surrounded by antennas and network cables, every piece of comb had to be carefully reached and removed by hand.

The best part? Finding the queen.

Saved, not exterminated.

There's something satisfying about watching clean beeswax emerge.
